Aria's POV 12

918 Words
The moment I stepped through the door into the omega quarters, Natalie practically launched herself off her bed. "There you are," she said, landing right in front of me with her hands on her hips. I froze in my tracks, clutching the doorway. "What?" Her eyes narrowed suspiciously as she took a slow step closer to me. "Where were you?” My stomach twisted into a tight knot. "I was within the pack,” I replied, trying to sound normal as I tried to brush past her. "Don't lie to me," she warned, blocking my path. One thing about Natalie is that once her instincts sense that there's something up, there's something up for sure. "I'm not lying…” Before I could dodge her, Natalie grabbed both of my shoulders, spun me around, and leaned right in to sniff my shirt dramatically. I stared at her in complete disbelief. "Did you just smell me?" "Maybe," she said, tilting her head. "Natalie, stop it." Her eyes widened until they were practically popping out of her head. "Oh my goddess." "What now?" I groaned, rubbing my temples. "You smell like Beta Damian," she squeaked, pointing an accusing finger at my chest. I choked on my own spit, coughing slightly as my face turned hot. "What are you even talking about?" "I'm talking about the fact that you left this morning looking normal and you came back smelling like a very attractive man," she said, a massive grin spreading across her face. Heat rushed all the way to the tips of my ears. "Fine if you insist…but don't tell anyone… we were training," I explained quickly, keeping my voice low so the other omegas wouldn't hear. "That's all." "Training" she repeated, raising one eyebrow. "Yes." "Just training?" I let out a long, heavy groan and threw my head back. "Yes, Natalie. Just training.” She crossed her arms over her chest, looking entirely unimpressed. "I don't believe you." "Good thing I wasn't asking for your opinion," I retorted, shaking my head. Natalie opened her mouth to keep interrogating me, but an older omega walked into the room holding a stack of clean towels. "Enough gossiping, you two," the older woman scolded gently. "Dinner won't serve itself." Natalie let out a dramatic sigh and threw her hands in the air. "There goes my investigation." I rolled my eyes at her silliness, but inside, I felt relieved for the distraction as I followed her out to the kitchen. What was she on to? Had she seen us together or something. The rest of the evening went by in a blur of endless work. Between carrying heavy trays of meat, wiping down greasy tables and serving the hungry warriors of the pack, I barely had a single second to stop and think about what had happened at the arena. Unfortunately, my peace ruined the second Damian walked in. He entered the grand dining hall just as we were wiping down the last few tables. Instead of heading toward the head table where Kael usually sat, he walked directly toward me. My heart completely betrayed me by skipping a beat, hammering wildly against my ribs. Traitor, I thought to myself, glaring down at the wooden table. "Natalie. Aria," Damian said softly as he stopped beside us. Natalie immediately beamed, leaning against her broom. "Beta." His dark golden eyes shifted over to me. "I need a favor." I looked up at him, shifting my weight from one foot to the other. "A favor?" He nodded once. "I need you to do some shopping for me at the mall tomorrow." I blinked, genuinely surprised. "Me?" "You and Natalie," he corrected, looking between the two of us. I exchanged a totally confused look with Natalie, who was already practically vibrating with excitement beside me. "What exactly are we shopping for?" I asked, folding my damp cleaning rag in my hands. A faint, rare smile touched the corners of his lips. "A gift." "For who?" I asked before I could stop myself. His expression softened in a way I hadn't seen before. "A special lady." The moment those words left his mouth, something cold and ugly twisted sharply inside my chest. I hated the feeling immediately. It made my chest feel tight and uncomfortable. It was completely ridiculous for me to feel that way. Damian was a high-ranking Beta, and he could buy gifts for whoever he wanted. It was absolutely none of my business. But still, hearing him say those words hurt far more than it should have. "Oh," was all I managed to squeeze out of my tight throat. "You'll do it?" he asked, watching my face closely. I swallowed hard and forced a polite smile onto my face. "Of course." "Good," he said, looking pleased. "I'll leave instructions with the shop owner before you arrive.” With a short nod, he turned around and walked away, his heavy footsteps fading into the noise of the dining hall. Natalie waited until he was completely out of sight before shoving her elbow hard into my ribs. "A special lady,” she whispered loudly. I rubbed my sore side and glared at her. "Stop it." "Someone sounds jealous," she taunted, singing the words softly. "I am not jealous," I lied, turning back to the table and wiping it far harder than necessary. "Sure you aren't." “ Natalie I'm tired, let's finish up and head to bed.” “ Okayyyyyy,” she said with a smile spreading across her face.
