The next morning, the sky was gray and rainy as we got into town. Natalie knew exactly where it was so she led the way.
“ You'll love it Aria,” she said excitedly. “ It's like an art gallery of tge finest dresses…well for the wealthiest people,” she added.
The shop was impossible to miss. It was the biggest and most expensive boutique in the entire block. The second we pushed the glass door open, I understood why only the wealthiest pack members shopped here. Beautiful , glowing dresses lined the walls in all sorts of colors, designs and fabrics. And a shiny crystal chandelier hung from the high ceiling, casting bright light over everything making it all look magical.
It was breathtaking, until a loud screaming voice caught my attention.
An angry woman's voice echoed through the store from near the back fitting rooms.
"No! Absolutely not!"
Several shop workers were standing completely frozen while a young woman glared down at them with her hands on her hips. Her long black hair fell down her back like shiny silk, and her outfit looked like it cost more than most people's salaries.
She was stunningly beautiful, the kind of striking beauty that made everyone stop and stare the moment she entered a room. Sadly, her personality seemed way less attractive than her face.
"I told you this color completely makes me look ugly t," she snapped, tossing a light pink scarf onto the floor. "Do I look ugly to you huh?”
The young sales clerk picked it up with trembling hands. "N-No Miss Selene."
"Then why would you bring it to me?" she demanded, crossing her arms tightly.
The poor worker looked like she was about to burst into tears right there.
Natalie and I traded a quick, wide-eyed look. Without needing to say a single word out loud, we both decided it was best to keep our heads down and mind our own business.
As we walked deeper into the store toward the main dress racks, I could feel the weight of that woman's eyes tracking us from across the room. A strange, itchy feeling crawled up my spine, making the hair on my neck stand up.
Did she know who I was or did she know Aria.
I searched my memories, but nothing came up.No, I definitely didn't know her. I would have remembered a face or attitude like that. I whispered to Natalie and let her know how uncomfortable I was with her looking at us.
"Let's just get what Beta Damian asked for and get out of here," Natalie whispered under her breath, pulling me closer to a rack of evening gowns.
"Agreed," I whispered back, pulling out a note he had handed to me before we left.
The instructions on the paper were clear and straightforward: Find a dress, something elegant and something that speaks beauty….it should be exactly your size, Aria. Pick something you think is beautiful.
That part about the size was what confused me the most as I read it over again. “Why in the world did this mysterious gift need to fit my body?
"Because it's obviously for you, dummy," Natalie whispered in my ear.
I almost jumped out of my skin, clutching the note to my chest. "Natalie, stop saying that."
"Because it's obvious!" she insisted, grinning from ear to ear. " I know him and I've seen how he behaves and acts around you…he fancies you. I mean he lliterally asked for your exact size."
"Lots of women could be my size," I argued softly, moving down the line of colorful dresses.
"He asked you to pick it out."
"Because he trusts my taste," I countered, though my own heart did a little flip inside my chest. Natalie rolled her eyes, looking totally unconvinced by my excuses.
I tried my best to ignore her and focused on the clothes. A few minutes later, my eyes landed on a gown tucked near the back, and my breath caught in my throat.
It was a deep, rich red gown made of smooth satin. The skirt flowed down gracefully and a delicate silver thread was stitched along the neckline in tiny floral patterns. It was simple enough that it didn't look flashy, but it was so pretty that it would make anyone wearing it feel special. A special dress for his special woman.
I smiled softly to myself, touching the soft fabric with my fingertips. "This one."
Natalie stepped up beside me, her eyes going wide. "Oh wow. That is absolutely gorgeous."
I lifted the hanger slightly off the rack to get a better look at the waistline. But before I could even turn it around, another hand reached out from behind me and violently grabbed the wooden hanger right out of my grip.
My smile vanished instantly. I turned around slowly and my heart dropped into my stomach. It was the angry woman from earlier.
“ Hey, I was seeing that,” I said.
She ignored me completely, holding the red dress up to the bright light to check the fabric. Then, she turned her head toward one of the nervous shop employees who was standing nearby. "This shouldn't be in this size, what were you all thinking," she said coldly.
The shop assistant blinked in confusion. "Miss Selene,it's on the plus size section and—”
"I want it taken to the head designer and altered to fit my exact measurements," she ordered, tossing it at the assistant.
The clerk hesitated, looking awkwardly between Selene and me. "But Miss, that dress was currently being looked at by—"
"I don't remember asking for you to open your mouth," Selene cut in, her voice slicing through the air like a blade.
The entire boutique seemed to go dead silent. Nobody moved, nobody breathed.I wondered which she was that she had so much power over them.
Beside me, Natalie's face turned bright red with anger, her hands curling into tight fists at her sides. "Excuse me—" she started to yell.
I quickly reached out and grabbed Natalie's forearm, holding her back before she could step forward. "Natalie, don't."
"But Aria, she just took it right out of your hands " Natalie hissed under her breath.
"It's fine," I whispered softly, pulling her back a step.
It wasn't fine at all, and my chest burned with frustration. But causing a huge public scene with a wealthy pack member would only bring trouble down on our heads, and as an omega, I couldn't afford that kind of attention.
Selene's dark eyes slowly slid over to me.
For a long, heavy second, our eyes locked. And a weird expression flickered across her face.
It wasn't just mean annoyance anymore. It looked like... recognition. My heart hammered against my ribs, does she know who I really am?
But almost as quickly as it appeared, the look vanished from her face, replaced by a cold, fake smile that didn't reach her eyes at all.
"Such a shame," Selene said softly, her voice dripping with fake pity as she looked at my simple plain clothes. "It really would have been a disaster if you actually had to wear it, luckily I saved it.”
Without waiting for a response, she turned on her high heels and walked away toward the fitting rooms.
Natalie stared after her retreating back in absolute disbelief. "I really, really don't like her," she muttered, crossing her arms tightly.
"Yeah," I whispered, watching the fitting room curtain close behind the strange woman. "Neither do I."
And deep down in my gut, I had a terrible feeling that this wasn't going to be the last time we ran into Miss anger issues.
