Aria's POV 19

1207 Words
The dining room was quiet as Damian, Kael, and Silver ate their evening meal at the long wooden table. I stood a short distance away, keeping my eyes lowered and my hands folded neatly over my apron while Natalie stood beside me holding a water pitcher. Every movement in the room felt heavy and deliberate. Even with only the three of them sitting at the table, the tension in the room was suffocating. Silver was sitting uncomfortably close to Kael, practically leaning her body against his shoulder. She kept fluttering her eyelashes, tilting her head, and letting her fingers trail softly across his forearm every time she spoke to him. Kael looked completely exhausted. His jaw was set in a tight, stiff line as he stared down at his plate, barely touching his food. He did not lean toward her, but he did not shove her away either. He simply tolerated her presence with a cold, distant quietness. Now that Natalie had opened my eyes to the truth, watching Silver play the role of the sweet, comforting companion made a surge of disgust rise in my throat. She had been putting on this exact same act when I was Lydia. Back then, I had genuinely believed she was just doing her job. I had welcomed her into our home and considered her a friend. In reality, she had just been waiting in the dark, watching my every move, desperately waiting for me to disappear so she could step into my life. "Kael, darling," Silver spoke up, breaking the silence. Her voice dropped into a sweet, helpless tone that seemed completely fake. "Before we finish our meal, there is a rather serious matter I need to bring to your attention. It concerns the household staff." Kael did not look up from his plate. He picked up his wooden goblet, took a slow sip and set it back down. "What about them Silver?" Silver turned her head toward the side of the room and pointed a sharp manicured finger straight at me. "One of the new omegas was extremely disrespectful to me earlier today in the hallway. She spoke back to me, completely ignoring my authority ... an omega needs to know her place Kael. I strongly believe she needs to be disciplined so the rest of the servants do not get any foolish ideas." My breath caught in my throat, but I forced my expression to remain completely blank. I kept my head bowed, staring at the polished floorboards, waiting to see how my former mate would react. Kael slowly turned his head. His deep dark eyes landed on me, scanning my face and my quiet stance. There was no anger in his expression, only a heavy sign of fatigue. "Is this true, Aria?" Kael asked softly, his voice remarkably gentle for an Alpha addressing a low-ranking worker. I kept my chin tucked low and spoke in a quiet, respectful tone. "I did not mean any disrespect Alpha. I was only explaining why I had stopped in the hall when you spoke to me earlier." Kael turned his gaze back to Silver, his brows pulling together in a firm frown. "She was dripping wet from falling near the fountain," Kael said, his tone flat and completely devoid of the warmth Silver so desperately wanted from him. "I stopped her myself to make sure she was not going to get sick. She was simply answering your questions so there is no need for any discipline." A quiet laugh came from across the table. Damian leaned back in his chair, folding his arms across his chest with a small, amused smirk on his lips. He was the reason I was actually soaking wet and not that fountain lie. "Honestly Silver, I think you'rejust tryingto stir up drama," Damian chimed in, his golden eyes flicking over to me briefly before returning to her. "She works hard, keeps her head down and never causes trouble. You might be overreacting just a little bit here." I kept my gaze fixed on the floor, but my pulse was hammering against my ribs. Hearing both the Alpha and the Beta openly defend a simple omega right to Silver's face was something I had not expected. Silver’s face flushed a dark, angry red as both brothers shot her down in unison. Her lips pressed into a thin, pale line. She bit the side of her lip quickly trying to smooth over her humiliation before it showed any further. "Well... fine," Silver huffed, adjusting the silk sleeves of her gown. She leaned right back into Kael’s personal space, putting a fake and charming smile back on her face as she abruptly changed the subject. "Anyway, let's talk about more important pack matters, the Celestial Mate Ball is only one day away... Kael, you really should not have to go alone and sit there by yourself. I could easily go as your date, just so you feel comfortable and supported with everything going on." Kael did not even look at her. He picked up his knife, sliced into his meat and spoke in a cold, hard voice. " I am not going to the ball, and I am certainly not taking a date." "Oh, come on Kael," Silver lowered her voice laying her hand firmly over his forearm again, her voice rising in desperate persuasion. "It'd look terrible if the Alpha does not show up and obviously TV the entire pack expects to see their leader there, and having someone loyal by your side—" "I said no," Kael interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling Alpha command that made the situation even more awkward. Silver instantly yanked her hand back as if she had been burned, her mouth snapping shut in shock. Damian set his cloth napkin down on the wooden table, a glint of pure mischief shining in his eyes as he looked across at his brother and then over at me. "Speaking of the ball," Damian said casually, his smooth voice filling the quiet room, "Aria is coming as my date." The silence that followed was absolute. You could have literally heard a pin drop on the stone floor. Silver gasped out loud, her hand flying up to cover her mouth as her eyes nearly bulged out of her head. She stared at Damian in complete and utter disbelief. "What? Damian, are you completely out of your mind? She is a nobody omega I mean just look at her...She is a servant. That is not how this works at all. You cannot possibly bring a servant to the most prestigious pack event of the year!" "It is already decided," Damian said smoothly, standing up from his chair and cutting her off before she could work herself into a full rage. "End of discussion." Silver looked like she was going to explode. Her nostrils flared and her dark eyes darted between Damian and me with pure unfiltered venom. But Damian simply gave Kael a brief respectful nod, turned on his heel and walked out of the room, leaving Silver sputtering in helpless silence. I stood completely still beside Natalie, my heart thumping wildly against my chest. Only one day was left before the ball.
