Aria's POV 39

1091 Words
I walked back toward Kael's study, my head was still spinning from everything Silver had said in the hallway, but before I could even process it, I needed to know what had happened inside the office, that crash had sounded strangely heavy. I pushed the door open and stepped inside. Kael was sitting behind his desk, leaning forward with his elbows resting on the wood and his face buried in his palms. He looked pale, exhausted, and utterly pained. Then I saw his hands. Red, blistering burns covered his palms and fingers. Next to his elbow lay the files, charred around the edges and smelling strongly of smoke, but saved. He had pulled them directly out of the fire with his bare hands. A sudden pang of worry hit my chest before I could stop it. "Alpha," I said softly, taking a step toward the desk. "Your hands. What happened?" Kael didn't look up right away. He slowly lowered his hands, staring blankly at the burnt paper in front of him. "I am fine, Aria." "You are not fine," I pressed, stepping closer. "You need ointment for those burns. The skin is completely blistered, let me go to the infirmary and get—" "I said I am fine!" He suddenly exploded, his voice booming through the room as he slammed his injured hand down onto the desk. I flinched, stepping back instantly. "I don't need a doctor, and I don't need you fussing over me!" Kael breathed heavily, his eyes were now bloodshot. He was staring at me like he was barely holding himself together. "I was only trying to help," I whispered, keeping my voice steady despite the sudden change of behavior. “Well don't… I didn’t ask you to.” Kael snapped, his voice dropping into a harsh, warning growl. "Leave. Leave immediately." "Alpha, at least let me clean the desk before—" "I said leave!" he roared, pointing a trembling, blistered finger toward the entrance. "Get out, Aria!" I swallowed hard, keeping my expression neutral, and gave him a quick, obedient nod. "Yes, Alpha." I turned around and walked out, closing the doors behind me. What happened? All of a sudden he just switched up, was it something i said kr did…or maybe Silver told him something. After all he was like a puppet and she had the controls. As I made my way down the passage, my mind was racing. He had burned his own hands just to keep those files from turning into ash. He really cared that much and that alone made everything even more complicated. Then suddenly footsteps echoed behind me, and before I could turn, a tall figure stepped directly into my path, cutting me off and it was Damian. After the way he had cornered me in the archives earlier, prying into things he had no right to ask, I had zero patience for him. I didn't say a word. I simply shifted to the left to bypass him, but he moved with me, reaching out and grabbing my wrist to pin me against the wall. I let out a sharp breath, glaring straight into his dark eyes. "You are really fond of pinning me, huh?" I said coldly. Damian didn't let go, but his grip loosened slightly. "That's the only way you listen." "Let go of me Damian," I demanded, pulling against his grip. "I am not in the mood for your games right now." He looked at my face, he watched me struggle before he let out a slow, heavy breath. "Look... I am sorry for what I said earlier. In the archives….didn't mean to offend you." "Then what was that all about ?" I asked, looking right at him with bitter anger. " At this point, I feel like you are just using me because you think I'm a cheap slut who sleeps around the pack house." Damian's eyes went wide. "No, Aria, that's not—" "No," I cut him off, my voice dripping with defiance. "Since you want me to be a slut so badly, I'll just be Kael's slut." Damian's face transformed in an instant. A sudden, violent rage flashed in his eyes and he slammed his hand hard against the stone wall right next to my head. I didn't know if I was imagining things but he seemed…jealous. "If you have to be anyone's slut, you'd be mine," Damian growled, his face inches from mine, his voice sounding possessive. "Don't call yourself that. I never meant to say you were a slut, okay? Don't you ever call yourself that again." A sudden, unexpected heat pooled in my cheeks. My stomach did a strange twist as I stared back at him, caught off guard by the sheer intensity in his voice. "You have no right to tell me what I can or can't say," I stammered, trying to keep my posture stiff despite the flush on my skin. Damian watched the color rise on my face, and a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "I love it when you get mad at me," he murmured, his eyes scanning my face. "You look stunning." I pressed my lips together, trying to keep my breathing even. "Don't say that." "Why not?" he whispered, leaning in a fraction closer. "Because it's true?" "Because you don't mean it," I retorted, holding his stare. "And because someone is going to walk down this hall and see us like this.” Damian didn't answer right away. His gaze dropped down to my lips, lingering there for a long second until heat coiled up in my stomach. Then, slowly he brought his eyes back up to meet mine. "What do you have so far?" Damian asked quietly, his tone turning serious again. "What did you find out in the study just now? Did Kael tell you anything about the records?" "Not here," I said, looking nervously down the corridor. "Silver is wandering around, and Kael just threw me out of his office. If anyone sees us standing here like this, it's over." "Where then?" Damian asked, his thumb lightly brushing against the inside of my wrist before he finally released me. "Name the place." " I don't know where but we can meet in like an hour from now,” I whispered, rubbing my wrist where his fingers had been. "Do you know a spot where no one from the pack ever goes?" Damian searched my eyes for a moment, then gave me a single, quiet nod. "Follow me."
