His grip on my wrist tightened, pulling me so close I could feel the sharp, uneven beat of his heart against my ribs.
"We need to talk," Damian whispered darkly into my ear, his tone completely free of that sweet, fake concern he had just put on for show. "Right now."
I yanked against his arm, my heels digging into the stone floor. "Let go of me! I am not going anywhere with you."
"Stop fighting me Aria," he said, his voice dropping into a harsh rasp. "You are making a scene."
"I do not care about your scene!" I snarled, trying to twist my arm free. "You have no right to put your hands on me after what just happened."
Damian did not budge. He looked down at my face, his eyes sweeping over my features before his jaw tightened with sudden irritation.
"Why are you pushing me away, Aria?" Damian asked, his voice low and sharp. "I just saved you from Lawson and Selene. I stood up to her parents for you. Yet you act like I am the one who hurt you."
"Saved me?" I let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "You sat on your hands until Kael stepped in! You only care about your political marriage and keeping Lawson happy."
"You think I care about Selene?" Damian demanded, stepping closer until our boots almost touched. "She is nothing to me. Lawson is nothing to me."
"Then why were you standing there looking like a chicken while her father threatened to break my legs?" I shot back, my voice echoing off the stone walls. "You did not say a word until the Alpha walked into the room."
Damian's eyes flared with anger at the mention of the Alpha.
"Kael," Damian spat out, the name tasting like poison on his tongue. "It always comes back to Kael with you, does it not? I saw how he looked at you today. I saw how he pulled out his knife and cut your ropes himself while I was standing right there."
"He did what any decent man would do!" I yelled.
"He does not do anything out of the goodness of his heart Aria," Damian snapped, his eyes flashing dangerously. "He looked at you like you belonged to him. And I saw the way you looked at him too."
He leaned in closer, his grip tightening until it stung.
"He defended you today, and now you think he is your savior," Damian continued, his voice dropping into a low, quiet growl. "Do not pretend there is nothing going on between you two."
"He saved me from being kicked in the ribs by your future father-in-law," I shouted back, glaring into his dark eyes. "While you stood there figuring out how to save your precious reputation."
"Forget Lawson, and forget Selene...." Damian snapped, his fingers tightening like iron bands around my skin. "Listen to me, Aria. Kael trusts you. You are close to him. I need you to get on his good side."
I blinked, taking a step back as far as his grip would allow. "What are you talking about? His good side?"
"I need you to seduce him," Damian said flatly.
For a second, the entire hall went dead silent. I stared at him, convinced the drugs from the guards were still making me hallucinate.
"You want me to what?" I asked, my voice rising in disbelief. "Are you insane?"
"I am completely sane," Damian replied coldly. "You have his attention. Use it."
"You want me to throw myself at the Alpha?" I asked, my face burning with shock. "Have you lost your mind?"
Damian did not blink. A slow, ruthless smirk spread across his face, stripping away any last bit of the gentle Beta he pretended to be. The masked ambition in his eyes flared up bright and ugly.
"I am not going to be a Beta forever, Aria," he murmured, stepping closer so his words brushed against my ear. "I am going to take the throne. I am going to be the Alpha of this pack."
My breath caught in my throat. "You are planning a coup?"
"I am planning my rightful future," Damian said, his eyes glittering with arrogance. "And you are going to help me get it."
"And why would I ever help you do that?" I asked.
"Because Kael is standing in my way," Damian continued, his voice dripping with raw greed. "His authority, his power, his whole reputation keeps him locked on that seat. But a man blinded by a woman is a weak man. I want you to seduce him. Make him obsessed with you. Weaken his focus, ruin his control over the pack, and make him lose his position entirely."
"You want me to play the w***e so you can steal a crown?" I hissed, glaring at him with utter disgust. "Find someone else to do your dirty work. I am not your pawn, Damian."
"Do not act like you are above this " Damian argued, his grip pulling me an inch closer. "What future do you have as a servant? Cleaning floors for the rest of your life?"
"Anything is better than being your weapon." I spat out.
"Think about it..." " Damian demanded, shaking my wrist slightly. "If I become Alpha, everything changes. You will not be a servant scrubbing floors anymore. You will be at my side. We can use each other. I get the throne, and you get power, protection, and freedom. A strategic partnership."
I opened my mouth to shoot him down again, ready to spit in his face, but the words froze right on my tongue.
A strategic partnership.
My mind raced, spinning through the dark memories of my past life. The mysterious murder. The betrayal. The hidden truth behind why he had had killed me in cold blood. Kael was at the very center of that web. He held the secrets, the old records and the power. As a low-ranking servant, I could never get close enough to Kael's private life to find out what really happened back then.
But if Damian was actively pushing me into Kael's inner circle? If I had a legitimate excuse to break past Kael's guard without raising suspicion?
I could use Damian's blind ambition to get exactly what I wanted. I could get close to Kael, unravel the truth about my past murder, and tear down whoever destroyed me.
I let a thick, tense silence stretch between us. I lowered my head, pretending to struggle with the decision, letting my shoulders slump as if I was slowly breaking under his pressure.
"What if he sees right through it?" I whispered softly, making sure I sounded frightened. "Kael is not stupid, Damian. If he realizes what I am doing, he will kill me."
"He will not kill you," Damian assured me, his tone growing eager. "He is already soft for you. I saw it today. You just need to lean into it."
"And what happens if Kael catches onto us?" I asked, keeping my voice trembling just enough to sound hesitant. "What if he finds out you sent me?"
Damian smiled, a hungry, victorious look flashing in his eyes. He knew he had me. "He will not. He is already drawn to you, Aria. You just have to play your cards right."
"You promise I will be safe?" I pressed, looking up at him through my lashes. "You promise you will protect me when it is over?"
"I give you my word," Damian said smoothly, lying through his teeth. "You help me take his crown, and you will never have to bow to anyone again."
Slowly, I raised my head and locked my eyes onto his.
"Fine," I said, keeping my tone flat and cold. "I will seduce your Alpha. I will make him lose his head and I will help you tear down his power."
"That is my girl," Damian whispered, looking thoroughly pleased with himself.
I pulled my wrist out of his grip, smoothing down the front of my dress with a slow, deliberate motion. He thought he was using me as a stepping stone to his precious throne. He had no idea I was using him as the key to my revenge.
