Kael instantly froze like he had just seen a ghost, and for the first time since I met him, he looked genuinely scared.
It was a strange thing to see because he was a was a powerful Alpha, yet his jaw went tight and his hands slightly stiffened as soon as Silver just stepped into the room. Whatever Silver held over him, it was enough to make a leader shrink in his own office.
Silver closed the door behind her, her eyes darting between the two of us.
"Silver was what?" she repeated, stepping further into the room. "What were you two talking about?"
Kael cleared his throat, pulling himself together as best as he could. "Nothing to worry about. We were just discussing a… um , a small surprise for you for the upcoming pack gathering. Aria was helping me organize everything you know.”
Silver did not look convinced at all,she raised an eyebrow, her gaze sliding over to me. "A surprise… is that so?"
"Yes," I said quickly, backing Kael up without hesitation. "We wanted to make sure everything was set before saying anything to you."
Silver let out a soft, humorless hum. It did not show whether she believed us or not. Instead, her eyes fell on the stack of dusty folders resting on the corner of the desk.
"What are these?" she asked.
"Oh," Kael said, his voice tightening again as he shifted uncomfortably. "Those are the old archive files you asked about earlier."
Without another word, Silver stepped up to the desk and picked up the entire stack. She walked casually over to the stone fireplace, where a low fire was crackling and tossed the folders straight into the flames.
My heart dropped into my stomach. Those were important records and most importantly they were the pictures of my own murder, burning right in front of me. I wanted to reach out and pull them back, but I had to stand completely still and watch the paper curl and burn into black ash.
"Is there anything else left down there?" Silver asked, turning back to Kael with a pleasant smile.
"No," Kael said softly. "That was all of it."
"Good," Silver said as smoothed down her dress and looked at me. "Kael, can I please speak to Aria for a moment? Alone. I promise I will send her right back."
Kael hesitated, looking at me with a worried expression, but he ultimately nodded. "Alright. Don't take too long." A smile spread across her face as she walked out and I followed Silver out into the passage, as office door clicked shut behind us.
The moment we were out of Kael's earshot, Silver turned around and pinned me with a vicious glare.
"What were you doing in there?" Silver demanded, her voice dropping into a harsh whisper. "What were you two really planning…what was he about to say about me?"
"He didn't tell me anything," I said, keeping my face as blank as possible. "As we told you, we were just talking about a surprise for the dinner."
"Do not play stupid with me," Silver hissed, stepping closer. "I am not an i***t, Aria. You two were covering up something. I saw the look on his face when I walked in."
"I am just telling you the truth," I replied.
"Listen to me very carefully," Silver said, pointing a manicured finger at my chest. "If I find out whatever it is you are hiding from me, it won't be good for you. It is better you tell me right now, or I will deal with you later. And trust me, you do not want me as an enemy."
I swallowed down my anger and shrugged slightly. "It is up to you what you want to believe. I literally just told you that it was nothing."
Silver stared at me for a long, quiet moment, her eyes narrowed. "Fine."
Before she could turn away, a question slipped out of my mouth that I couldn't hold back.
"Why do you want to erase everything that belonged to the previous Luna?" I asked quietly.
Silver stopped, looking at me with pure annoyance. "Is the Luna still alive?"
"No," I said.
"Exactly," Silver snapped. "She is dead. There is no need to keep her things rotting in the basement."
"Why?" I pressed, keeping my voice gentle, like I was just curious. "Can't those things be kept for memories? Obviously, Kael would want to remember his Luna."
Silver's face twisted in disgust. "That is none of your business. Your job here is just to assist Kael. If it were up to me, you would have been thrown out of this pack house weeks ago."
She stepped right into my space, her breath cold against my cheek.
"Stay out of my way, Aria," Silver whispered dangerously. "And stay out of trouble. Because if you keep digging into things that do not concern you, you might end up just like Lydia."
My chest went cold. "What does that mean?"
Silver gave me a small smile that looked evil, but before she could answer, a loud crash echoed from inside Kael's office, followed by the sound of a body hitting the floor.
"I'll get rid of you one day... after all I'll be Luna soon."
she was so desperate to become Luna, then everything that Natalie had told me about her wanting Kael flashed back.
what if she was connected to my death. something unsettling sat in my chest, Kael was about to confess something and I'd she hadn't walked in he'd have told me.
" Get back to work, but remember what I told you. I'm going to be keeping an eye on you. I'm sure you are aware that I don't like you, so stay on my good side."
She started to walk away and then turned back , " Oh, if anyone asks you about those files...tell them you know nothing about them, especially that ego headed Beta Damian." and with that she left.
There's was definitely something she knew and didn't want anyone knowing about it. I wasn’t going to stop until I got to the bottom of things.
