I hurried up the stone stairs, my chest wqs heaving and my hands tightly gripped the stack of files against my body. My mind was still reeling from what just happened. My skin crawling from Damian's lingering presence and the dark memories he had brought up without knowing.
When I reached the Kaels office, I didn't even knock. I just pushed the door open and stepped inside, letting it click shut behind me and that's when I noticed.
He was sitting at his desk, but the moment he heard the door, he looked up and his eyes immediately caught my pale face, my frantic breathing and the way I was clutching the folders like a shield. He set his pen down and stood up right away, walking around his desk toward me.
"Aria?" he asked, his voice filled with instant concern. "What happened? Are you alright?"
He reached out and gently took the stack of files from my hands, setting them down on the edge of the desk so I wouldn't have to carry them anymore. His hands brushed against mine and they felt so warm. Compared to Damian's invasive presence..Kael felt like a safe haven.
How can the man who killed me feel like the only safe person in this building? I thought to myyself as my throat went tight.
"I... I am fine, Alpha," I managed to say, taking a shaky breath to pull myself together. "Just... dusty down there and the stairs."
Kael searched my face for a second clearly not fully believing me, but he didn't push. Instead, he poured a glass of water from the jug on his side table and handed it to me.
"Drink this," he said softly.
I took the glass and swallowed a few gulps, the cold water soothed my dry throat. I looked down at the dusty files resting on his desk.
"These are the records you asked for," I whispered, keeping my tone respectful.
Kael looked down at the stack, his expression darkening into a tired frown. He ran a hand over his jaw, letting out a slow breath.
"Silver suggested I burn them," he said quietly, looking back up at me. "She thinks we should burn everything down there that belonged to Lydia. To get rid of her memory entirely."
A cold shock went through me at the sound of my name. why on earth would she suggest such a thing ? I stared at him, my mind spinning.
"Burn them?" I asked, struggling to hide my confusion. "Why would she want to burn the official pack records?"
"She says she knows best," Kael replied with a bitter, faint smile. "Even after Lydia's death, Silver was the one who instructed me on how to handle everything and how to conduct myself. She stepped in and took control because I was losing it."
I frowned, completely baffled by what he was saying. Silver instructed him and she controlled the narrative...she really had him wear around her finger.
"What do you mean?" I asked, stepping a little bit closer. "How did Silver instruct you?"
Kael went quiet, staring at the dusty paper in front of him.
"There is something about Lydia's death that only Silver and I know," he murmured, his voice dropping into a low whisper. "One day, once I fully know I can trust you, maybe I will tell you. Because... it eats me up every night, Aria and it never stops."
My heart hammered against my ribs and my pulse raced as a sudden, desperate burning curiosity flared inside me. He suffers over it and It eats him up... but yet he is trying to destroy everything dealing with me.
"You know you can trust me with anything, right?" I said, looking right into his eyes, keeping my voice soft and gentle. "You don't have to worry about anything, Alpha. I am on your side."
Kael looked down at me, searching my eyes for what felt like an eternity. "Yes... I know I can. But..."
"But?" I pressed softly.
He went completely silent for a long moment, like he was questioning himself whether he could actually trust me. Finally, he let out a long breath and met my gaze.
"I trust you," he said, his deep voice trembling slightly. "Promise me you will not say a word of this to anyone. Not a single soul."
"I promise," I whispered back without hesitation. "I swear it."
Kael swallowed hard, stepping closer to me so his voice wouldn't be heard.
"The official records of Lydia's death are a lie," hel confessed. "She did not die out in the forest with the rogues."
I had to force every muscle in my face to stay calm, forcing myself to act like an innocent assistant hearing this for the first time instead of the victim standing right in front of him.
"What... what really happened?" I whispered, leaning in slightly.
Kael stammered, his usual iron posture crumbling as he looked away, his jaw working as he tried to force the painful words out. "I... I... well, Silver was th—"
Before he could finish his sentence, the doors burst open and Silver stepped into the room, holding a leather folder in her hand. Her gaze immediately landed on the two of us standing so close together.
"Silver was what?" Silver asked coldly, stepping into the office and letting the door click shut behind her.
