scream tore out my throat as I stumbled backwards, my eyes widened in fear. I thought I was in danger once again , till I heard a familiar laugh, I got on my knees and looked at the figure wiping water off it’s face.
“ Damian?”
He swam to the edge of the river, and stayed there staring at me with his eyes glistening under the star light. “ What are you doing here?”
“ I needed some place to be alone,” I answered softly, still recovering my breath.
“ And why did you need space?”
“ I,well, her body..”
“ Did it remind you of something,” he asked tilting his head.
“ Yes actually, it did…”
He lowered his gaze and turned his back towards me.
“ Lydia was a remarkable woman, strong, kind, intelligent, smart and very hot.. it’s unfortunate she was mates to my brother. If she were mine none of this would have happened.”
I could feel my face flash red,"Wait, so you wanted your brother's wife ?”
“ I wouldn’t say I wanted her..but I admired her, she was just too good for my brother and her death …is still very mysterious to me..”
Silence settled between the two of us, I wished I could tell him the truth. I took a deep breath, carrying the end of my dress and put my feet in the lake. I would have loved to immerse my entire body in it but I wasn’t even sure I could still swim or float.
“ Why is a beautiful lady like you frowning?”
“ You think I’m beautiful?”
“ Yes I do, you don’t think you are beautiful enough?”
“ Well…if I had to be put up for an auction against slim and petite women I’d probably be the last to get sold or not get sold at all.”
“ You have an amazing body, you just have to work on it. Oh and I’d buy you first at that auction.” He smiled winking at me.
“Thank Damian..for standing up for me against your Alpha and for everything I already feel so much love in this place.”
He smiled softly, passing his hand through his beautiful black hair. “You need to get back to the square, I’m going for a run and this place is not safe. I won't be able to protect you.”
“ No it’s actually pretty safe.”
“ And how do you know that?”
I was about to respond when I held myself mid sentence, “You’re right, I’ll get going.” Gently I took my feet out of the water, and turned to leave. When I reached a certain distance I looked back and saw him standing there, water falling off his skin as he tossed his hair back with a flick of his head. His body looked more defined underneath the starry night. And for some reason the movement felt like it was happening in slow motion.
He turned into my direction and I instantly hid behind a tree big enough to hide me. I held my breath as if he could hear me breathing , because why was I watching my husband's hot brother getting out of the water.
Minutes later took a peek in his direction and he was gone. I heaved a sigh of relief and was about to take a step when I bumped into a huge tall figure and when I looked up it was him again.
“ Did you like what you saw?”
My eyes instinctively looked up at chest and trailed down to his abs, I swallowed hard and looked back at him.
“ I..”
“ Don’t lie to me Aria,” he walked forward, backing me up into the tree. He stood in front of me like a tower, his delicious scent and body heat engulfed me, I felt weak in the knees.
He placed one hand on the tree and leaned in close, was he about to kiss me ?
My stomach fluttered in ways I couldn’t control it, heat spread throughout my body and his scent made everything worse. His eyes traveled across my face as if he were searching for something, and they finally landed on my lips. He leaned in closer than before, my face was inches away from his, I couldn’t protest, I was barely able to construct a sentence, my heart was beating so hard it would escape my chest.
“ Get to the square, it's not safe out here,” he whispered and pulled back, walking away. “Be safe.”
What the hell was that…I slapped my hand over my face in frustration. What was I thinking…he is my husband’s brother, beta of the pack why on earth would I think he’d kiss someone like me. I held my dress and pushed forward finding my way back to the square.
There the ceremony was cut short, it was chaotic rather than peaceful. I found Natalie and asked her what happened, she explained that Kael was giving the priests and elders a hard time. “ He doesn’t want to burn her body or give the ashes to her family. That’s what they are trying to resolve.” She paused, heaving a sigh. “ This must be really hard on him, he loved Luna so much and her random death is still a fresh wound.”
“ Kael we need to complete the ceremony,” one of the elders said.
“ Yes she needs to rest and her family wants her ashes.”
But Kael refused to budge.
“ Well if you won’t do it I’ll do it on your behalf,” a voice boomed across the square. She lit up a torch and walked towards my body. Ever since I stepped foot in this pack, I hadn’t seen her till now..Silver, our pack's priestess.
She was one of our best priestesses, she had a prophetic touch to her and whatever she predicted or read would always happen.
She walked forward with her touch and looked at my body, there was something unsettling in her eyes. She held the touch over my body, and let it go, engulfing my body in flames.
“ Silver, No!” Kael stood there stunned and he instantly dropped to his knees. Silver walked towards him , ger hips swaying side to side, she knelt down and whispered something in his ears and he seemed to go back to normal in seconds.
They got up holding hands and hugged, not a friendly type of hug..the kind of hug two admirers would give each other…and they did it right there in front of my burning body.
Maybe she was just trying to comfort him and I was overthinking everything. But the satisfaction in her face told me otherwise.
