I continued walking down the stone corridor, ignoring the sound of his heavy boots slapping against the floor behind me.
"Aria!" Damian called out again. "Aria, wait."
I did not stop and I did not slow down. I kept my chin high, staring straight ahead at the hallway leading to the servants' quarters.
"Aria, stop walking… come on let's talk.”
A large hand caught my shoulder, firmly turning me around. I stumbled back a step, breaking his grip immediately and rounded on him.
Damian stood there, breathing slightly heavy, his broad chest rising and falling. His dark eyes searched my face,ot was filled with a mix of frustration and complete confusion.
"What is your problem?" Damian asked, stepping closer. "You won the fight. You proved your point to Selene, you proved it to her friends and you won the right to train. Why are you walking away like you just lost?"
A cold, bitter laugh escaped my throat. "Are you really asking me that right now?"
"Yes, I am asking you," Damian said, narrowing his eyes. "You beat her flat on her back. You got exactly what you wanted so why are you acting like this?"
"Because I should not have had to fight for basic respect in the first place!" I shouted, my voice echoing down the empty corridor. "You stood there and let them treat me like an object. You put my dignity on the line for your little arena game! You really want to question my worth Damian huh ? You want me to stand around and prove I deserve to be treated like a normal being while you watch with plum lipstick smeared across your jaw?"
Damian went completely still. His mouth opened slightly, but no words came out.
"I am done playing these games with you," I said, my voice dropping into a flat, steady line. "Now, if you will excuse me, I need to get going."
I turned my back on him before he could say another word and walked away. This time, he did not follow me.
Later that afternoon, I was down in the lower washroom, scrubbing stone basins and wringing out heavy damp linens. My body still ached from the fight, my knuckles were sore and a dull bruise was forming on my thigh where Selene had kicked me but keeping my hands busy kept my mind from spiraling.
Until the door opened, I did not look up, assuming it was one of the other servants bringing in more laundry.
"Aria."
I froze, the wet linen heavy in my hands.
Damian walked into the small room, his large frame making the tight space feel instantly smaller. He was no longer in his dark training clothes. He wore a simple shirt, his dark hair damp from a shower.
I kept my eyes fixed on the soapy water in the basin. "If you need something washed, leave it by the door."
"I am not here for laundry," Damian said softly.
He stepped closer, stopping just a foot away from where I stood at the washboard. The usual strict, harsh air around him was completely missing. He looked... uncomfortable , almost nervous.
"I came to apologize," he said quietly.
I blinked, slowly raising my head to look at him. "What?"
"I was wrong," Damian said, meeting my gaze directly without flinching. "I should not have put you in that position this morning. I should not have let Selene speak to you like that and I should not have turned your dignity into a spectacle. It was wrong and I am sorry."
I stared at him, completely speechless.
"I promise you that will never happen again," Damian continued, taking a small step closer. His deep voice was smooth, stripping away all the sharp edges he usually carried as Beta. "I do not even understand why you let those stupid comments get to you. You are incredible, Aria. You have this softness to you, but when you step into that ring, you are so fiercely strong. You carry yourself with so much grace and honestly, you are breathtaking. Your eyes, your lips, the curve of your body, every part of you is gorgeous. You make it so hard for a man to look away and Selene could never compete with that even if she tried for a hundred years."
A strange, fluttering warmth bloomed deep in my stomach. My cheeks burned hot and my heart gave a sudden, ridiculous flutter against my ribs. Giddiness rushed through me so fast it made me feel lightheaded.
I looked down at my hands, suddenly unable to hold his intense gaze.
Damian walked towards me and reached out. His warm fingers gently brushed against my cheek and he softly tucked a stray strand of dark hair behind my ear. His touch was so light, so remarkably gentle, that a shiver ran down my spine.
"From now on, I will be gentle with you," Damian murmured, keeping his hand near my face for just a second longer before pulling it back. "I will not be so harsh on you during training anymore. You are mine to protect now, Aria. If you need anything. Anything at all you just let me know. I will make it up to you. I am so sorry once again."
"It... it is fine," I managed to whisper, my voice barely working.
He gave me a small, nod, turned on his heel and walked out of the washroom, closing the door softly behind him.
I stood there by the washbasin for a long time, completely frozen in place as my heart was hammering against my chest like a trapped bird.
Damian had apologized to me.
My mind spun as I thought about how Damian usually was. Damian was a man who never liked to apologize, even when he was clearly wrong. Even when arguments broke out between him and the other pack warriors or with Kael. He would rather fight back relentlessly and argue until he proved his point. Even if he could not fully prove his point, he would keep pushing just as long as he fought back and had the last word. He hated bowing his head to anyone.
But today... he walked into a laundry room to look a low-ranking omega in the eye and admit he was wrong. He had showered her with praise, held her gently, and called her his.
What type of man is this? I thought to myself, pressing a warm, trembling hand against my flushed cheek where his fingers had just been. He was so sweet...
A strange, terrifying feeling settled in my chest, making me question everything I thought I knew about him.
