Silver took a step toward me, her eyes flaring with anger. "What did I just tell you moments ago?"
I took a half-step back, keeping my hands visible. "I did not try to speak to him," I explained, trying to keep my voice calm. "I'm sure if you saw what happened he stopped me himself. And it would be completely disrespectful if I just walked away from the Alpha of the pack so what was I supposed to do?"
Silver let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "You were supposed to lower your head and keep walking, little omega. You don't get to make excuses."
I took a deep breath, tired of being pushed around. I looked her dead in the eye and asked, "Why does it even concern you whether or not I speak to him?"
Silver took a step forward, her jaw tightening as shock crossed her face. "Are you questioning me? You have some nerve to talk back to me, do you even know who I am?"
"I know you are the priestess of this pack," I replied, standing my ground. "Not the guard who decides who gets to talk to who."
Silver’s face flushed dark red with rage. “ You little,” She raised her hand as if she was about to slap me right across the face.
"What is going on here?"
A stern voice echoed down the hallway. An older female omega stepped into view, carrying a basket of folded linens. She looked between Silver’s raised hand and my quiet posture, her eyebrows pulling together in a sharp frown.
Silver quickly lowered her arm, smoothing down the front of her dress. "It is none of your business," snapped Silver at the older woman.
"Actually, when it involves the omegas, it is my business," the older woman replied firmly, stepping between us. "And you have no business standing around harassing her in our hallway."
Silver rolled her eyes, throwing her head back with a cold, arrogant smirk. "Whatever. Know your place, both of you," she sneered. Without another word, she turned on her heel and strutted away down the corridor.
I let out a long breath and quickly made my way to the omega quarters to change out of my wet clothes.
When I walked into our shared room, Natalie was sitting on her bed, folding a stack of shirts. She looked up and blinked at my damp hair.
"What happened to you?" Natalie asked.
"I fell into a fountain," I sighed, grabbing a dry towel and pulling off my wet clothes. "And then I had a delightful conversation with Silver."
“ Silver? Did she give you a prediction?”
“ Actually no… she warned me to stay away from Kael and not to talk to him.”
Natalie groaned loudly, dropping the shirt in her lap. "Ugh, Silver. I don't even know why she has become so possessive over Kael lately. Honestly, she has been like this for a very long time."
I paused, rubbing another towel over my hair, and looked at her. "What do you mean?"
Natalie leaned forward, dropping her voice to a low whisper. "Even when Kael was married to Lydia, Silver was never happy for them. I mean Never. She actually wanted Kael to marry her to begin with, way before Lydia and Kael ever got together. She was head over heels for him and so was determined that they'd end up together. “
My hands went completely still around the towel. "Really?"
"Oh, absolutely," Natalie said, nodding her head dramatically. "Back then, she would pretend as if everything was fine just to avoid conflict with Lydia. But deep down inside, everyone in the pack house knew that she wanted Kael for herself. Now that Lydia is no longer alive, there is a big possibility she wants to warm her way right into his bed."
"Did Lydia know?" I asked softly, trying to sound like a curious outsider while my pulse hammered in my throat. "Did the Luna know how Silver felt about her mate?"
Natalie scoffed, shaking her head as she picked her laundry back up. "Lydia? No way. She was far too blind and trusting when it came to the pack inner circle. She treated Silver like a trusted friend and advisor. Lydia never suspected a thing."
"And Kael?" I pressed, stepping closer to her bed, my voice barely above a whisper. "Did he ever give Silver a reason to think she had a chance?"
"Who knows with men like him," Natalie replied, shrugging her shoulders. "He was devoted to Lydia, or at least he acted like it. But Silver always stayed right in his shadow, waiting for an opening. And now that Lydia is gone, Silver acts like she is already the next Luna in line."
A heavy, strange feeling settled in the pit of my stomach as Natalie's words echoed in my mind.
Back when I was Lydia, I had known Silver was always hovering around Kael. I remembered seeing her at council meetings, at dinners, always finding a reason to stand just a little too close to him or offer him advice or a prediction. But I had always assumed it was because of her role as the and yes, I had trusted her. I had never once realized that beneath her quiet guidance, she actually wanted my mate for herself.
How much had I really missed in my past life? And how deep did these secrets actually go?
