Just shy of noon the next day, they left the city in a procession of six horses. Only six. Marcus had visited two stables the night before and three more this morning. In the end, he had spent every penny they had to spare, but even that had been insufficient. The mounts he had procured were less than ideal. Most were past their prime. With one beast relegated to the role of packhorse, Desa and Kalia had to double up. They were the smallest, and so it made sense for them to share a saddle.
