Night Love By - Eva Talukder Chapter 20: The Final Stand The gates of the Sylhet mansion groaned as they swung open to admit a convoy of black SUVs. Arura stood by the window, her heart thumping against her ribs like a trapped bird. She could see her mother stepping out of the lead vehicle, flanked by men in sharp suits—lawyers and a court-appointed trustee from France. Zayan stood right behind Arura. He didn't touch her, but his presence was a wall of cold fire, protecting her. He had spent the last hour reviewing the documents Ayan had brought. Suravi Devi’s legacy was vast, but the condition was clear: the inheritance would only be released if the marriage was proven to be built on mutual consent and affection. Zayan: "This is the moment, Arura. Once they step through those doors, there is no turning back. If you say one word about the kidnapping, I lose everything. My mother’s name will be dragged through the mud, and I will be in a prison cell by nightfall." Arura: (Turning to look at him) "I told you, Zayan. I am not my mother’s puppet anymore. I know what I have to do." The doors burst open. Eva Talukder (Arura’s mother) walked in with the confidence of a woman who had never lost a battle. She looked around the foyer with disdain, her eyes eventually landing on Arura. Eva: "Arura, come here. Now. Don't worry, the nightmare is over. Mr. Dubois here is the trustee for the Suravi estate. He is here to see the truth of this 'marriage' and take you home." Mr. Dubois: (A stern man with a French accent) "Mr. Zayan, according to the late Suravi Devi's will, this marriage must be verified as a genuine union. Your mother was very specific. She did not want her wealth to fund a forced alliance. Madam Eva here claims her daughter was taken against her will." Zayan remained silent, his face a mask of iron. He looked at Arura, letting her take the lead. This was her stage now. Arura: (Stepping forward, her voice steady) "My mother is mistaken, Mr. Dubois. I am here because I chose to be here. My marriage to Zayan might have started in the midst of family complications, but it is my own choice." Eva: (Shocked) "Arura! What are you saying? Have you lost your mind? He kidnapped you! He forced that ring on your finger!" Arura: "No, Mother. You forced this. You forced it twelve years ago when you blackmailed a woman out of her own country. You forced it when you lied to me about who Zayan really was. If there is a victim in this room, it’s not me—it’s Zayan, whose life you tried to destroy." The room went deathly silent. Eva’s face turned a shade of pale that Arura had never seen before. The trustee, Mr. Dubois, raised an eyebrow and began taking notes. Mr. Dubois: "These are heavy accusations, Mrs. Talukder. Arura, are you saying that your mother’s testimony is motivated by personal gain?" Arura: "She wants the Suravi estate. She thinks that if she breaks this marriage, the wealth will fall into a legal limbo that she can exploit. But I love my husband. And I will stand by him." Zayan’s breath caught in his throat. He knew Arura was lying about the "love" part—or was she? The way she said it sounded so real, so fiercely protective, that even he started to believe it. He stepped forward and placed a firm, protective hand on Arura’s waist, pulling her closer. Zayan: "I believe you have your answer, Mr. Dubois. My wife has made her position clear. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have a family to mourn and a legacy to protect." Eva: "This isn't over! Arura, you are making the biggest mistake of your life! He will break you! He is a monster!" Arura: "The only monster I see is the woman who broke a mother’s heart for money. Get out of our house, Mother. Before I have Zayan’s security throw you out." Defeated for the first time, Eva Talukder was forced to leave. As the SUVs drove away, the heavy silence returned to the mansion. Arura felt her strength leaving her. She leaned back against Zayan, her legs shaking. Zayan turned her around to face him. He looked at her with an intensity that was almost overwhelming. Zayan: "Why did you say it? Why did you say you loved me in front of them?" Arura: "Because they needed to hear it. And because... because I realized that even a monster can be a protector, Zayan. You kept me safe from the media. You told me the truth when you didn't have to. I’m not saying I’ve forgiven you for everything, but I’m not your enemy anymore." Zayan leaned in, his forehead touching hers. For the first time, the "Obudro Pohori" looked at peace. "You saved me today, Arura. My mother’s legacy is safe because of you. From this day on, you are not my prisoner. You are the queen of this mansion. And I will spend the rest of my life trying to earn that 'love' you lied about." But as they stood there, a new shadow appeared. Ayan walked in, looking at his phone with a worried expression. Ayan: "Zayan, we won the battle, but the news is out. Someone leaked the footage of the confrontation. The media knows you are Suravi Devi's son. And they know Arura is the daughter of the woman who blackmailed her. The world is coming for both of you." The chapter ends with the sound of camera flashes and reporters shouting at the gates. The secret was out, and the real storm was just beginning.
