The darkness in the cafeteria was suffocating, thick with the tension that radiated from every corner. I couldn’t see anything, but I could feel the electric hum of power all around me—like the air itself had grown heavier with each passing second.
I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do in this kind of situation. My heart hammered in my chest, my senses on high alert. Every sound, every movement felt amplified in the pitch-black room.
Then, a sharp c***k split the silence, followed by the low growl of something inhuman. I couldn’t tell who or what it was, but I knew Damon was still in the room, and his presence felt like a storm about to break.
“Luca!” I hissed, but my voice seemed lost in the chaos. Where the hell was he?
A few more moments passed, and then the lights flickered back to life—just in time for me to catch the shadow of Damon’s figure lunging toward me.
I barely had time to react before something else slammed into Damon’s side, sending him stumbling back with a roar of frustration. I saw Luca, his eyes burning with rage, standing between me and Damon. Jace was right behind him, ready for whatever came next.
“You really want to test me here?” Damon growled, wiping blood from his lip where Luca’s punch had landed. His eyes glinted with malicious amusement. “You think a couple of weaklings can protect her?”
“I’m not going anywhere, Damon,” Luca shot back, his voice ice-cold. “You’ve made your point. Now back off.”
Damon’s gaze flickered to me, a cruel smirk tugging at his lips. “Don’t get too comfortable. This place will break you long before you even know what hit you. But you already knew that, didn’t you?”
Without another word, Damon turned on his heel and stalked toward the exit, his presence lingering like a shadow in the room. But even though he was gone, the tension didn’t dissipate. The other students around us were eerily quiet, some with wary glances cast our way, others pretending they hadn’t seen anything.
I took a shaky breath, my heart still pounding from the close encounter. “What the hell is his problem?” I managed to say, trying to steady myself.
“He’s not the only one who’s going to cause trouble,” Luca replied, his voice tense. “But he’s the biggest immediate threat. Damon doesn’t give up easily.”
I nodded slowly, still trying to process everything. “What’s this place really about, Luca? You said there were secrets, but it feels like more than that. This isn’t just a school—it’s a battleground.”
Luca’s expression darkened. “You’re right. Blackthorn Academy isn’t just about education. It’s about power, alliances, and control. The creatures who come here are all trying to carve out their place in the supernatural world. And the humans—well, we’re the pawns in their game.”
“Pawns?” I repeated, my stomach sinking. “So, that’s it? I’m just a piece of some game?”
Luca’s eyes softened, just a little, but his voice was still grim. “You’re not just a pawn. But you need to understand something—there are forces at work here that you don’t fully comprehend yet. Forces that would love to see you as nothing more than a tool to use and discard.”
Before I could respond, a sharp voice interrupted us. “Luca, Jace, what the hell was that?”
I turned to see a tall, slender woman with platinum blonde hair and piercing green eyes approaching our table. Her posture was regal, but there was an edge to her movements—a predatory grace that made it clear she was no stranger to danger.
“Just a little... misunderstanding,” Luca replied, his tone cooler than usual.
The woman’s gaze flickered to me for a moment before returning to Luca. “Ezra’s not the only one you need to worry about, you know. But I’m sure you’ve already figured that out.” She gave me a half-smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “You’re the new human, right?”
I nodded warily, unsure of how to respond.
Her smile widened, a flash of something dangerous flickering in her eyes. “Welcome to Blackthorn, Mystic. It’s going to be an interesting year.”
With that, she turned on her heel and walked away, leaving behind a trail of icy air in her wake.
I glanced at Luca and Jace, who both seemed on edge. “Who was that?”
“That was Evelyn,” Jace muttered, his voice low. “Don’t trust her. Or anyone else here, for that matter.”
Luca’s eyes flickered to the door, where Damon had disappeared. “We’re not the only ones watching you, Mystic. Keep your guard up.”
I glanced at them both, a sinking feeling settling in my chest. “This place is a nightmare.”
“You don’t even know the half of it,” Luca replied, his expression unreadable.
I couldn’t tell if I was in over my head or if I was just starting to scratch the surface. But one thing was clear: I wasn’t getting out of this place easily. And the more I uncovered, the more I realized that Blackthorn Academy was far darker—and more dangerous—than I could have ever imagined.
