Chapter Three: The Academy The gates of Blackthorn Academy loomed before me, wrought iron twisted into elegant patterns that radiated a foreboding energy. The academy wasn’t your typical school. Nestled deep in the mountains and hidden from human eyes by layers of enchantments, it was a sanctuary—or a battleground—for the supernatural. “Welcome to the madhouse,” Jace muttered beside me as we approached. “Charming,” I replied, clutching the strap of my bag tighter. The events of last night still clung to me—the Shadowborn, Luca’s transformation, and the creeping sense that my life would never return to normal. Luca, in his human form once again, walked ahead of us, his shoulders tense as though he expected danger at every turn. “Blackthorn is the safest place for you right now,” he said without looking back. “But don’t let that fool you. Everyone here has their own agenda.” As we passed through the gates, the air seemed to shift, charged with an energy that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. The sprawling campus was a blend of gothic architecture and mystical design. Towering spires reached for the sky, and the surrounding grounds pulsed with life—trees that shimmered faintly, fountains that whispered secrets in languages I couldn’t understand, and students whose auras practically screamed power. “Great,” I muttered under my breath. “Just what I needed—a school full of people who could probably kill me with a snap of their fingers.” “You’ll fit right in,” Jace said with a smirk, clearly enjoying my discomfort. As we entered the main building, I felt eyes on me from every direction. Whispers followed us through the grand hallways, some curious, others hostile. “New blood,” someone muttered. “She’s the human,” another sneered. I tried to ignore them, but their stares were heavy. It didn’t help that Jace and Luca, both clearly known here, flanked me like bodyguards. “Why are they looking at me like that?” I asked, my voice low. “You’re an anomaly,” Luca replied. “A human in this world is rare—and dangerous.” “Dangerous to who?” I asked, but he didn’t answer. Before I could press further, a sharp voice cut through the noise. “Well, well, if it isn’t the newest charity case.” I turned to see a boy leaning casually against the wall, his dark hair tousled like he’d just rolled out of bed. His sharp features and piercing gray eyes gave him a predatory air, and the slight smirk on his lips told me he was trouble. “Damon,” Luca said, his tone low and warning. “Relax, wolf,” Damon drawled, pushing off the wall and strolling toward us. “I’m just here to say hello. You know, welcome the human to the big leagues.” “I don’t need your welcome,” I said, my voice steady despite the way his presence made my skin crawl. Damon’s smirk widened, revealing a hint of fang. “Feisty. I like her already.” He stepped closer, his eyes locking onto mine. “But let’s get one thing straight, sweetheart. You might’ve gotten past the gates, but that doesn’t mean you belong here.” Before I could respond, Jace stepped between us, his blade already in his hand. “Back off, Damon. She’s not your prey.” Damon raised his hands in mock surrender, but the amusement in his eyes didn’t fade. “Relax, Jace. I’m just having a little fun. Besides,”—he leaned in slightly, his voice dropping to a whisper meant only for me—“you’ll find out soon enough who the real predators are.” With that, he turned and walked away, leaving a chill in his wake. “Who was that?” I asked, once I was sure he was out of earshot. “Damon,” Luca said, his voice tight. “A vampire. And a dangerous one.” “Great,” I muttered. “Day one, and I’ve already made an enemy.” “You’re going to make plenty more,” Jace said with a grin. “But don’t worry. This place isn’t all bad. Just… mostly.” I sighed, glancing around at the overwhelming chaos of the academy. If this was my new reality, I had no choice but to adapt. The question was, would I survive long enough to find my place?
