Prologue

As a kid I always dreamed of a better world. I used to think that my mommy or daddy would come and save me. I couldn’t believe that my reality was this miserable. Sometimes I’d pray that I’d wake up and realize it was a nightmare. As I got older, I began to realize that my life would never change, and I began to make plans. At first, I tried to escape, but I never got the chance. Then I tried to kill myself, so I would be free. Since then, I’ve been tied up and there’s nothing I can do anymore. I don’t know much about anything. I’m in the dark. I mean I’m literally in the dark as I live in a basement with no window and no light. Everyday people are coming down here. Sometimes they’d beat the hell out of me, and sometimes they’d use me as a tool for their pleasure. Today was a special day. Something happened that had never happened before. One of the doctors came with a woman. She looked so shocked when she saw me. Eventually, the doc went back up to get my meal and the woman spoke to me. I do not dare hope but somehow I can’t seem to forget her words. “Hold on girl. You’re getting out of here if it’s the last thing I do” Doc came back with a piece of bread and my medication. Then they were both gone. It’s been hours and no one else had come. I’ve been all alone without a beating and without being used. I think that’s good because I think Doc made a mistake with my medication. I feel wrong. My body hurts even more than usual and my mind is sleeping. But I’m holding on because that woman made me believe that I could.
