CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE Lightning struck across the full length of the Les Avants valley, coursing from the top of the Alps right down to Montreux and zigzagging about the lake to plunge into an unknown destination. Twilight had been blotted out and it now seemed as if it were the middle of night. “How quickly the darkest hour comes.” Mary pulled her shawl about her and unfolded the carriage blanket to place upon her and Polidori’s knees. The valet pushed the hood of the cabriolet up and over the doctor and Mrs. Shelley before upturning his collar against the approaching inclement weather. Polidori whistled and the cabriolet lurched forward into the darkness.
