CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
She held out her hand to Polidori, requesting he stay with her awhile before joining the company of the other men in the study. The three young gentlemen who hovered at his side tipped their hats in respect before retiring toward the aroma of port and cigars.
“It appears you have acquired a group of avid admirers, Doctor Polidori.”
“I am afraid, my dear, they are men more of means than of substance. Whereas you pry me for intellect and facts, they only wish for the tawdry snippets and scintillating gossip.”
Mary laughed. “I have no doubt you are more than amply giving them what they desire.”
Polidori’s eyes gleamed, his subtle smile broadening between perfectly clipped mutton chops. “Do you mind if I smoke?” He lifted the port decanter and filled their glasses.
