CHAPTER SIXTY-NINE
Rachel had been sitting for the best part of the morning on the top deck of the South Street Seaport, the New York Times folded in her lap. She’d made her way through signing a few dozen copies of FIRE ON THE WATER: A Companion to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and now she pressed the rim of a satisfying cup of coffee to her lips as she looked out over the East River and the sweeping magnificence of the Brooklyn Bridge.
She was content to sit and study the beautiful construction that had risen from the river at a time when many had thought it impossible. For something so massive and beautiful to be conceived and built and then endure was one of the great wonders of the world.
