Chapter 34: “When Love Defied Death”

1604 Words
POV: Thelma The door burst open again, and Luna rushed in, followed by a group of warriors. She took one look at the scene, Marcus's body, the trapped witch crystal, and me slowly turning to stone and her face went pale. "What happened?" she demanded. "No time to explain," Theo said. "Where's Xavier? We need Xavier now!" "He's coming," Luna said. "He felt something through the mate bond. He and his warriors are maybe five minutes behind us." "She doesn't have five minutes!" Theo gestured at me frantically. "Look at her!" Luna moved closer, her eyes widening as she saw the stone spreading across my body. "Oh no. Oh, Thelma, no." I tried to speak, but my jaw was stiffening. The words came out slurred. "Not... your fault..." "Save your strength," Luna ordered, kneeling beside me. "Don't try to talk. Just hold on a little longer." But I could feel it. The stone was at the base of my throat now. Soon it would reach my heart. And when it did, I would be frozen forever. A statue. A monument to all the mistakes and manipulations that had defined my life. Through the mate bond, I reached out for Xavier. He was close. I could feel him running, pushing himself beyond his limits despite still being weakened from the poison. He was terrified. Desperate. He knew something was wrong. Xavier, I tried to send through our connection. I'm sorry. I'm sorry for running. For not trusting you. For everything. His response was immediate and fierce. Don't you dare say goodbye. Don't you dare give up. I'm coming. Just hold on. Please, Thelma, just hold on. But the stone was moving faster now. My entire torso was gray and hard. I couldn't move my arms or legs anymore. Could barely breathe. "Her heart," Elena whispered. "It's almost at her heart." Theo grabbed my hand or tried to. My fingers were completely stone now, cold and unmoving. "Thelma, listen to me. You're the strongest person I know. You died and came back. You survived being raised by enemies. You found your power, your mate, your family. You don't get to leave now. You don't get to leave me. I just found you. I just got my sister back." His voice cracked, and through our twin bond, I felt something I'd never felt from him before. Not hatred. Not resentment. But pure, desperate love. "I know I was awful to you," he continued, tears streaming down his face. "I know I said terrible things. But Thelma, you're my sister. My twin. My other half. And I can't lose you. I won't lose you." I wanted to tell him I loved him too. That finding him had been worth all the pain. That having a brother, even for just a short time, had meant everything. But I couldn't speak anymore. The stone had reached my chin. "Where is he?" Theo shouted at Luna. "Where is Xavier?" "Almost here," Luna said, but her voice was thick with grief. She knew the truth. We all knew the truth. Xavier wasn't going to make it in time. The stone crawled up my face. I felt it covering my cheeks, my nose. The world began to go gray as my eyes started to harden. Through the mate bond, I felt Xavier's presence getting stronger. He was right outside. So close. But not close enough. I love you, I sent through our bond. Xavier, I love you. Thank you for everything. Thank you for trying to save me. "NO!" Xavier's roar echoed through the lair. I heard him burst through the door, heard his footsteps pounding toward me. "Thelma! THELMA!" But I couldn't see him anymore. My eyes had turned to stone. The world went dark. The last thing I felt through the mate bond was Xavier's anguish, raw and devastating. Then even that began to fade as the stone reached my heart. This was it. This was how it ended. Not in battle. Not in sacrifice. But as a statue, a victim of magic I'd never asked for and couldn't control. I'm sorry, I thought, not sure if anyone could hear me anymore. I'm so sorry I couldn't be stronger. Then I felt nothing at all. Xavier's Perspective (Brief) Xavier dropped to his knees beside Thelma's stone form. She was completely gray now, frozen in place, her expression caught in something between fear and sorrow. "No," he whispered, his hands trembling as he reached for her face. The stone was cold under his fingers. "No, no, no. Thelma, please." "Xavier," Luna said gently. "Her heart.." "I know!" he shouted. "I felt it through the bond. I felt it stop." He looked at the others desperately. "True love's kiss. That breaks curses. Tell me that works. Tell me I can save her." "It might," Elena said, her voice hoarse from crying. "If your love is true. If it's pure and selfless and real." "It is," Xavier said fiercely. "She's everything to me. Everything." "Then try," Theo urged. "Please. Save my sister." Xavier cupped Thelma's stone face in his hands. Through the mate bond, he couldn't feel her anymore. It was like touching air, like she'd disappeared completely. But he refused to believe she was gone. Refused to accept that after everything, the battles, the betrayals, the second chances, this was how it ended. "I love you," he whispered against her stone lips. "Thelma, I love you more than I've ever loved anything. More than my pack. More than my own life. You're my mate, my partner, my everything. Come back to me. Please come back." He kissed her. At first, nothing happened. The stone remained cold and hard under his lips. Around him, he heard Luna's soft sob of disappointment. Then he felt it. A tiny pulse through the mate bond. Faint. Barely there. But real. "It's working!" Theo gasped. "Look! Her fingers!" Xavier pulled back and saw the color returning to Thelma's fingertips. The gray was fading, replaced by warm, living flesh. The change spread slowly, reversing the petrification inch by inch. But it was too slow. Xavier could feel through the bond that Thelma's heart was still stone. Still frozen. The curse was breaking from the outside in, but her heart was the last thing to change. And time was running out. "Her heart," Elena said urgently. "The curse is breaking, but if her heart stays stone for too long, even if the rest of her turns back, she won't survive." Xavier looked at Thelma's face, now partially flesh again, her eyes still closed. Through the bond, he poured everything he had into her. Every ounce of love, every moment of devotion, every promise he'd ever made and kept. "Fight," he commanded through their connection. "Thelma, you're a fighter. You've never given up on anything in your life. Don't give up now. Don't leave me. Don't leave Theo. Don't leave any of us." The color reached her chest. Her shoulders. Her neck. But her heart remained gray. "Come on," Xavier begged, his voice breaking. "Come on, Thelma. Breathe. Just breathe." For a long, terrible moment, nothing happened. Then, finally, Xavier felt it through the mate bond. A single heartbeat. Weak and uncertain, but real. "She's coming back!" Luna cried. "Her heart, it's beating!" The gray faded from Thelma's chest, revealing warm skin beneath. Her heart beat again. Then again. Each beat stronger than the last. Xavier watched as the last of the stone disappeared from her face. Her eyes remained closed, but color had returned to her cheeks. She looked like she was sleeping. "Thelma," he whispered, his hand on her chest feeling her heart beat steady and strong now. "Open your eyes. Please open your eyes." For a moment that felt like eternity, she remained still. Then her eyes fluttered. And opened. Those beautiful golden eyes focused on him, confused at first, then filled with recognition and something that looked like wonder. "Xavier?" Her voice was hoarse, barely a whisper. "You saved me." "Always," he promised, pulling her into his arms. "I will always save you." She clung to him, and through their bond, he felt her emotions rushing back—fear, relief, love, gratitude, all tangled together. "My heart," she said. "I felt it stop. I felt myself dying." "I know." Xavier held her tighter. "But you're alive now. You're here. You're safe." "How?" She pulled back to look at him. "How did you break the curse?" "True love's kiss," Theo said, kneeling beside them. He looked at Xavier with something that might have been respect. "Turns out the stories are true. True love really can break any curse." Thelma looked between Xavier and her brother, then started crying. Not sad tears, but tears of relief and overwhelming emotion. "I thought I was going to die," she sobbed. "I thought it was over." "Never," Xavier promised. "As long as I'm alive, I will never let anything take you from me." He kissed her again, gentler this time. And through their mate bond, he felt her heart beating strong and true, matching the rhythm of his own. She was alive. She was his. And he would spend the rest of his life making sure nothing ever threatened her again. But as they held each other, neither of them noticed Elena picking up the crystal containing Morgana. Neither saw the way the witch's tiny form moved inside her prison, her eyes tracking them with patient, eternal hatred. The curse was broken. But Morgana's promise of revenge still echoed in the air. This battle was over. But the war had just begun...
