Broken

Jasper Trepidatiously, I made my way towards Gabby's home. Upon arriving I knocked twice on their large red front door. After a few moments Jessica, Gabby's mother, cracked open the entrance, peering out. She had obviously been crying. Her green eyes were glossy while a stand of red hair, just like her daughters, stuck to her cheek. “Jess, what is going on? Are you alright?” I asked, concerned by her appearance. Suddenly the door swung open. Behind her stood Ana and Derek. When my parents defeated the darkness, my biological father used his dark powers on people they loved, including Jess and Landon. Ana and Derek learned their united love had the ability to overpower the evil incantations and return those effected to their rightful mindset. My mother must have put the pieces together as well. “Jasper, you need to come in. Things are far more dire than we initially thought,” Ana said in a hushed tone. Jess stepped aside as I walked through the door. Once inside I noticed the home had been torn apart. Landon was in the living room pulling books from their shelf. It appeared he was searching for something as every book removed he would shake and flip through the pages before throwing it over his shoulder. “What the Hell is going on mom? Haven't you and Derek seen them since Gabby disappeared? It has been two years!” “I know Jasper and yes, we have seen them together briefly but it appears whatever spell was cast held extreme power. It would need the strength of both a witch or warlock and a dark angel in order to remain after being near the light your father and I hold.” “Where is Gabby? Before you say it, I know it was not Eva. Despite her darkness she loves Gabby greatly! I do know of a dark angel who was likely involved.” “What? Who?” they all yelled in unison. “I cannot tell you yet. Please trust me. Mom, you know I am doing everything I can to keep Eva on the righteous path but in order to do so I need you to believe I am not saying for a reason. This morning I bore witness to the darkness in her heart. If I betray her trust we will all be in grave danger, even you and dad,” I replied, pleading. Nobody spoke. Instead, they stared at me unsure of what to say. I chose to continue, speaking to Jess and Landon. “If you want me to help I need to know what you remember before Gabby disappeared.” “That is enough! You are a barely an adult. We have been through this before. In fact, we all risked our lives to save Eva from your father! Now it is Eva’s turn to help us. Tell us what you know!” Landon screamed as he stepped towards me. My parents immediately blocked Landon's path with my mother raising her hands to use her angelic forces while my father stood calmly next to her. Landon was his cousin but I had no doubt Derek would stop him if it came down to it. I was not scared of a fight but I did not want to battle him, especially under these circumstances. “Landon, yes. You helped us rescue Eva twelve years ago. We trusted you just as you trust us. Jasper is powerful and fated to Eva who appears to be a missing piece of this puzzle. If anyone can get through to her it will be him. Now, please tell him what you told us earlier. We will do everything to ensure your daughter is brought home safely,” Derek calmly said to his cousin. Slumping his shoulders and lowering his head, Landon conceded. “It was Fall… two years ago. Gabby returned home in a distraught state When we asked what was wrong she shut us out. Months went by and every day Gabby became more depressed. Nothing we did seemed to get through to her. At first Eva continued their daily visits but suddenly she stopped. We would ask Gabby and she ignored our questions,” Landon attempted to recall what happened but could not continue as emotions took hold. Grasping his hand, Jess took over. “Gabby came home from school early one day. She told me she did not feel well, needed to shower and rest. I could hear her vomiting in the bathroom. I walked in with a wet wash cloth and a glass of water hoping to comfort her. Instead I found her in tears, head over the toilet but the most shocking part was that she had removed her oversized shirt revealing her round stomach. It was clear our daughter was about six months pregnant. Gabby refused to speak to me despite my many attempts and disappeared a few days after. I remember Landon and I calling her phone. I flew every night, searching high and low for our daughter. I also checked with Eva but she reiterated what Gabby had already said, that they were no longer friends. The last thing I remember is the day we received a knock on the door. Landon and I hoped it was Gabby and we opened it together. A woman was there. I remember her handing me a piece of paper, instructing me to hide it. That is the last thing I remember. I have random memories of the two of you - your parents, Jasper. It was like you were partially breaking down the facade we were living but nothing concrete. You said it's been two years?!” Jessica concluded while tears swarmed her eyes. “Yes, love, it's been two years. Can you recall what this woman looked like?” Ana asked as she made her way over to her friend, putting her arm around her shoulder. “She was short with dark eyes. Her hair was long, a deep brown in color. She wore a maroon full length dress with long flowing sleeves. Her image has been scarred into my memory. The spell made it so I could not share it despite her face constantly taking over my mind,” Jessica replied while continuing to cry. “Derek, do you think you can have your sketch artist come over here? That may help us," my mother asked before turning to me. "Now, Jasper, your question has been answered. Please find out what you can and when you are able let us know of any progress. We are going to stay here and try to settle Jessica and Landon,” my mother stated. I nodded my head, gave Jess and Landon sympathetic glances then proceeded to leave their home. I had to find Eva and let her know what I learned about Gabby's disappearance. I desperately hoped she was not involved but deep within my heart was an unexplainable pain which began shortly after I entered the broken home.
