I ran straight into Liam comforting Mia when I headed to the bathroom.
It was as if the Moon Goddess had deliberately arranged it, so I'd hear every word of their conversation.
"Liam, I regret it. All these years, no matter how hard I've tried, I just can't get over you! I know you haven't gotten over me either. Can we give us another chance?"
The best men immediately jumped in to back her up.
"Liam, this is what you've been waiting for all these years!"
"Doesn't true love matter more than a fated mate?"
Liam wiped the tears from Mia's face without saying a word.
One of the best men pressed on, "If you're worried about the wedding, just have Noah fill in for you again! Get through the ceremony first, then break up with Ava later. That way, she won't be publicly humiliated. Ava loves you so much. She'll definitely forgive you!"
I slowly slid down the wall, a hysterical mix of laughter and tears rising in my throat.
On the day Liam proposed to me, I'd received a text from Mia.
Mia: Ava, do you really think you would've gotten the chance to stay by Liam's side if I hadn't left the Dubois Pack?
Mia: Bet if I so much as snap my fingers, Liam will drop everything and leave with me.
Back then, I was convinced I'd finally won Liam's heart.
I dismissed Mia's message as nothing more than petty jealousy.
Now, I knew she'd been telling me the ugly truth.
All she had to do was ask, and Liam would throw everything away for her.
Before I could even pull myself together, Liam walked into the dressing room.
I froze for a split second.
Then he picked up the purse Mia had left behind and spoke, "Ava, Noah will stand in for me for the rest of the wedding. Don't worry. He's only filling in for the ceremony. You'll still be the Luna of the Dubois Pack."
He gave my shoulder the same familiar squeeze he'd always used to placate me.
I forced a bitter smile.
"You're leaving with Mia, aren't you?"
Liam froze, but he didn't deny it.
Just a minute earlier, Mia had sent me another text.
Mia: See? All I have to do is snap my fingers, and Liam will choose me.
I stared at the man standing in front of me.
He looked so handsome in his suit.
I'd dreamed countless times of walking down the aisle on his arm and exchanging vows with him.
I'd loved him so much that I'd even designed the boutonniere pinned to his lapel myself.
This wedding was something I'd waited 7 long years for.
And now, it all felt like one cruel joke from beginning to end.
The gnawing heartache and burning rage inside me faded away.
In that moment, whatever love I had left for him died for good.
I swallowed the bitter ache in my chest and forced a small smile.
"Liam, we don't have to go through with this wedding."
Shock flashed across Liam's face.
"What do you mean?"
I held out the wedding ring.
"I mean the wedding is off. We're breaking the mate bond right now."
Liam stared at me for a few seconds before letting out a cold laugh.
"Ava, don't throw another petty tantrum. You know I hate it when you act like this."
He was right.
I knew him better than anyone—maybe even better than he knew himself.
For all those years, I'd walked on eggshells around him, bending over backward to match his moods and cater to his every little want and whim.
I'd played the perfect, obedient girlfriend by his side.
Whenever I complained, even a little, he brushed it off as another tantrum to get his attention.
But this time, I meant every word.
"I'm serious."
My gaze stayed steady and unwavering.
"Why force something that's never meant to be mine? I'll step aside so you and Mia can be happy together."
Liam's eyes turned icy, and his usually calm voice tightened with barely contained anger.
"You think there's something going on between me and Mia?"
Think?
Hadn't his actions already said so out loud?
He grabbed my wrist and yanked me toward him.
His heavy, strained breath brushed over the top of my head.
"Ava, you've been waiting 7 years for this wedding. You really want to throw everything away? And besides, family and close friends from both sides are here. What the hell do you think they'll say if we call this off out of nowhere?"
Oh, now he was worried about what the guests would think?
Where was that concern when he'd sent Noah to stand in for him at his own wedding? Had he ever stopped to think about what people would say if they found out?
I pulled my hand free from his grasp.
"Liam, I heard every word you said earlier. We'll break up sooner or later. What's the point of going through with the ceremony? Don't worry. I'll tell everyone it's my fault. I chose to call off the wedding and break up with you."
Liam's fists clenched tightly before slowly loosening again.
Just as he was about to speak, Mia walked in.
"Liam, what's taking you so long to get a purse?"
