“Wake up, peasant!”
I jolted up as cold water was drenched on me. I looked around confused about what was happening, I was ready to argue and curse out the person but I turned to see a woman with a scowl on her face.
“Do I still need to pour you another bucket of water before you realize what is going on? Get up and get dressed and meet me in the hall,” she said as she threw a maid uniform on my face before walking out.
I ran my hands through my hair in pain, “f**k!”
I looked around and the bed I slept on was soaked with water, I was on the verge of tears but I managed to keep myself in check. Yesterday the man I got to know as Victor handed me to the woman who drenched me with water with specific instructions.
The person who has bought me was nothing less than an asshole who called me human. It sounded weird to be called that—it was like I was being insulted.
I got up and changed quickly to avoid any more problems, I was a slave and my life wouldn't matter if I tried to argue with them.
I got to the hallway to see three other girls lined up. They all looked my age, I joined the queue.
“Good morning!” I greeted, but the girls seemed to ignore my presence. Their face held no emotions, and they stood like robots waiting for command.
“Good morning….” The girl beside me whispered back. I turned to her with a smile which she returned but immigrants her face was drained into a frown as she looked in a particular direction.
I turned to see what or who could have scared her and I came face to face with the scary woman from before. I quickly took my position, my face without expression as I prayed nothing bad happened to me.
The lady stood in front of us, her hand holding a ruler, her eyes sharp and her ears twitching like she could pick up the sound of my breathing.
“Welcome to the Bloodmoon pack. My name is Nanny Josephine and I am in charge of the staff all around the Alpha’s house. You are here not to chit-chat but to work for the Alpha and the pack!” She paced back and forth as she delivered her speech.
“Pack? What’s a pack?” I asked whispered to myself but to my surprise, it caught the ear of Josephine. She walked back to me, her face scary, I couldn't look into her eyes.
“Human….”
My head was hanging low, trying my best to avoid possible eye contact.
“You look at me when I talk to you!” she yelled at me, which made me flinch.
“Yes ma'am!”
I brought my head up as my eyes met hers and I could pee on my body but I held myself.
“Wait behind! The rest of you…you are dismissed!”
The rest of the girls moved in uniform out of the room. When they were gone are attention was on me.
“Follow me.”
She turned and began to walk as I followed diligently with no questions. We passed different maids and workers who flinched when they saw Josephine pass by. They greeted and hurried by and I could tell they said a little prayer as she passed by them.
After walking for a while, we got to a door. She brought out the key and unlocked it as she walked in and I followed, closing the door behind me.
The office has a desk and a chair with a shelf filled with documents and books. She sat down on the chair brought out a piece of paper and slammed it on the table with a pen.
“Sign!”
“Huh?” I looked confused, she growled and I shook myself because I had not heard a human growling before.
“Sign, before I rip you apart” she warned and I immediately rushed to the table, I picked up the pen and began to sign. When I was done she snatched up the paper, rolling it up.
“That was a contract between you and the Alpha. You would serve him as his servant for ten years to repay your father's debt.”
“Wait what?” My eyes widened in horror, “did I just sign away my remaining chance at freedom?” I asked but no answer came. Josephine stood up and walked to me with a bracelet.
“Put this one!” She handed it to me and put it on and immediately the bracelet gripped me tight.
“That’s a tracker and it can only be removed by the command of the Alpha.”
“Alpha? You mean king?” I said to her as she shot me a glare.
“He is our Alpha and king, mind the way you talk about him. Now go to the kitchen and you will be assigned a duty.”
I quickly hurried out of there not waiting for more yelling from Josephine.
When I was outside the office, I did the sign of the cross.
“Alpha? Pack?” What does any of these things mean?
I took a deep breath and tried to process everything that had just happened. I had signed a contract to serve the Alpha for ten years to repay my father's debt. Ten years! I couldn't even begin to wrap my head around it.
As I made my way to the kitchen, I couldn't help but feel a sense of despair wash over me. What had my father gotten me into?
When I arrived at the kitchen, I was greeted by a bustling room filled with cooks and maids scurrying about. A stern-looking woman with a thick accent approached me.
"Ah, you must be the new human," she said, eyeing me up and down. "I am Chef Françoise. You will be working under me in the kitchen."
I nodded, trying to appear eager and willing. But inside, I was seething. A human? What did that even mean?
Chef Françoise handed me an apron and began to explain my duties. As I listened, I couldn't help but wonder what lay ahead. What would my life be like as a servant to the Alpha?
And what exactly was an Alpha, anyway?
