Chapter 3

One security guard pinched my face with a leering grin. "This Rourke girl has smooth skin. She's even prettier than Thea." The lead security guard stopped him immediately. "Do you have a death wish? She's still Mrs. Vaughan in name. Watch out, or Mr. Vaughan will kill you." The first guard spat on the ground in contempt. "Tsk. With the way he treats her, he might just hand her over to us for fun later." As the group gradually walked away, I picked myself up from the ground. The sharp gravel had scraped my palms raw, and drops of my blood fell to the floor, blooming like tiny plum blossoms. It reminded me of the day I saved Felix all those years ago. I had planted a few plum trees exactly where his blood had spilled, telling him that the plum blossoms watered by his blood would surely bring good days ahead. It turned out the good days were reserved for his family, while it only brought the end of mine. I limped toward the rooftop. Along the way, several housekeepers pointed and whispered about me. "I heard her family cares about dignity the most. Who is she trying to seduce dressed like that?" one muttered. Another scoffed, replying that everyone knew Thea had endured hardships with him for 3 years and was his favorite. "Does she really think those old stories from her family's house will keep him hooked? A bankrupt heiress is worse than a dog in this estate." "Hush, do you want to die?" a third housekeeper hissed. "Thea said talking about it would bring bad luck to the baby, so everyone in the company is forbidden from mentioning it." The housekeepers hurried away. It seemed everyone knew about the bankruptcy except Felix. Or perhaps he simply didn't care and didn't want to know. Standing on the rooftop, I could see my bare feet already stained with blood. The city below was bustling with traffic and countless glowing windows. It made me think of when I was a little girl, I was afraid of the dark. My father used to make the housekeepers turn on every single light in the villa, so the whole house would be brighter than daytime. But now, in this massive city with so many lights, not a single one was lit for me. I failed my family and the loyal employees who had been forced to resign. Just this morning, as my grandmother took her last breath in my arms, she gripped my hand weakly and begged me not to seek revenge, asking me to just live on. I couldn't do it anymore. My parents were gone, my grandmother was dead, and tens of thousands of employees had lost their livelihoods. The man I loved the most had personally pushed me to a dead end. I had nothing left to hold onto. My sins were unforgivable, and I could only pay for them with my life. Closing my eyes, I leapt into the abyss. 'Felix, may we never meet again in our next lives.' When I opened my eyes again, I was floating right next to Felix. Snow had fallen all night, leaving a thick blanket of white across the estate. No one had noticed that the bride sent by the Rourkes had disappeared. Thea rested her head on his arm, her voice dripping with sweet affection. "You had your men lock her up, but she's been spoiled her whole life and can't handle such hardship. Why don't you let her out?" Hearing my name, he became irritated instantly. "I'm punishing her for her own good. Being my wife isn't easy. She has to learn how to behave before she can earn anyone's respect and secure her place." A flash of jealousy crossed Thea's eyes, but she maintained her fragile, obedient facade. "I'll go make the arrangements right now," she said softly. Suddenly, she clutched her stomach and let out a pained scream. Panic washed over Felix instantly, and he frantically summoned the family doctor. The doctor examined her with a deep frown. "Her pulse is steady, so it doesn't seem like an illness. It looks more like she's been cursed. To break it, we need a finger from the hex caster to use in the remedy." Tears immediately streamed down Thea's face at his words. "It's Olivia. Why can't she forgive me?" She looked up at him with wide, pitiful eyes. "Let's just forget it. If my death can make her happy and bring peace between you two, then it's worth it." She made a sudden move as if to bash her head against the wall. Felix grabbed her tightly, pulling her into a comforting embrace. "Don't be afraid, I'll definitely get justice for you," he coaxed gently. He then glared in the direction of my room, gritting his teeth in fury. "That witch! Not only does she refuse to repent, but she's also getting worse. Guards, go to her room and drag her here now!" A few moments later, a housekeeper rushed back into the room in an absolute panic. "Terrible news! Mrs. Vaughan is missing!"
