Chapter 7: Into the Grid

585 Words
Nova Cascadia’s data grid loomed over sector 9, a tangle of holo-towers and pulsing conduits that powered the Concord’s surveillance. Elias Kane led a small team—Nora, Lyra, and two Lycan scouts—through the undercity’s shadows, their steps silent despite the weight of their gear. The map from Nora’s data-pad burned in his mind: a control node, key to the Concord’s neural network, was hidden in a fortified server hub. But Jaxon’s signal, broadcasting from the same location, screamed trap. “Eyes sharp,” Elias whispered, his pulse-rifle raised. The kill switch’s threat lingered, a dull ache in his bones, but Nora’s presence beside him kept it at bay. Her data-pad glowed faintly, guiding them through the maze. “Node’s two hundred meters ahead,” Nora said, her voice low. “But the security’s layered—holo-cams, AI sentries. I can hack them, but I need a direct port.” Elias nodded, his eyes scanning the darkness. “We’ll get you there. Lyra, flank left.” Lyra’s amber eyes flickered with resentment, but she obeyed, slipping into the shadows with a scout. Her distrust of Nora was a liability, but Elias couldn’t deal with it now. Not with Jaxon’s betrayal—or worse—hanging over them. The server hub was a fortress of glass and steel, its conduits humming with energy. Nora crouched at a maintenance port, her tools dancing across the data-pad. “I’m in,” she said, her fingers a blur. “Give me five minutes.” Elias stood guard, his senses on edge. The air carried a faint metallic tang—Concord tech, too close. His beast stirred, claws itching to extend. Then it hit: a sharp pain in his chest, like a needle through his veins. The kill switch. He staggered, catching himself on the wall. “Elias!” Nora’s voice was sharp, her hand on his arm. “What’s wrong?” “It’s nothing,” he lied, forcing the pain down. But his vision blurred, amber creeping in. “Keep working.” She hesitated, her eyes searching his. “You’re not okay. Tell me.” He gripped her hand, grounding himself in her touch. “The kill switch. It’s… active. I can feel it.” Her face paled, but she nodded, returning to the hack with renewed urgency. “I’ll find the node. Hang on.” Lyra’s voice crackled through the earpiece. “Elias, we’ve got movement. AI sentries, closing fast.” “Hold them off,” Elias ordered, his voice rough. He raised his rifle, the pain subsiding but not gone. The beast wanted out, and he wasn’t sure he could stop it. The sentries emerged, sleek drones with red optics, firing pulse-blasts. Elias and the scouts returned fire, their shots sparking against the drones’ shields. Nora worked faster, muttering code under her breath. “Got it! Node’s online. I can disable it—” A blast rocked the hub, and Jaxon’s voice echoed from the shadows. “You’re too late, Kane.” Elias spun, his rifle trained on the young Lycan. Jaxon stood at the hub’s edge, his eyes glowing amber, a Concord device strapped to his wrist. “You betrayed us,” Elias growled. Jaxon’s laugh was bitter. “You’re the betrayal, Elias. Leading us to s*******r for a human.” Before Elias could respond, Kael Drayce stepped from the darkness, his plasma blade humming. “Well done, Jaxon,” he said, his optic locked on Elias. “Now, let’s end this.” *****
