Chapter 3: The Future Has Arrived

1182 Words
“So… nobody’s going to talk about what happened at the café a little while ago? Or are we just going to sit here stalking my new sister-in-law?” “Sebastian, shut up!” “Please, Eleonor! I don’t know what all this tension and these long faces are about. Do you really think Fate is going to pass us by just because we don’t say anything? Damn it! We came here to reclaim our future. What the hell did you think would happen? That we could pick the parts we liked and somehow stay safe from the rest?” “No, i***t! But I expected us to have some time. We just got here. We’re not prepared for any of this yet. This isn’t the right time.” “Well, tough luck. Your older brother just found his f*****g Luna. So sit down and buckle up, little sister, because this journey is starting with or without your approval.” “You’re such a—” “Silence.” Although the word was spoken quietly and without emotion, the argument stopped immediately, and once again, every eye turned toward Alexander. He knew the confrontation between his siblings was partly his fault. They wanted answers, but he wasn’t in a position to give them yet, and the truth was, he was just as lost as they were. He had hundreds of questions of his own, but at that moment, all he could focus on was fighting the urge to return to that café and learn more about Evelyn, the woman Fate had chosen for him. Still, he understood Eleonor’s apprehension, which was why he hadn’t objected to leaving. His sister always relied on reason and caution in her efforts to protect the family. But whether she liked it or not, this time she’d have to admit Sebastian was right. The future had arrived. They could either face it or run from it. And they didn’t run. “We’re not stalking Evelyn, Sebastian,” he forced himself to say at last, watching customers enter the café. “The lawyers said they’d send us a message to come sign as soon as they finished the changes we requested to the document. They should send it today, so we’re stuck waiting.” “But—” “As for meeting my mate,” he continued, not letting his brother finish, feeling his heart speed up at referring to Evelyn that way for the first time, “we’ll talk about it at home. But you’re right. We can’t pick and choose what Fate has in store for us. Don’t refer to her as my f*****g anything again, though. I won’t allow you to disrespect my Luna.” “That’s bullshit, and you know it,” Ethan said, speaking up for the first time, clearly annoyed. “Not the part about respecting your mate,” he quickly clarified, “but all that crap about us not being able to choose our future. You know that better than anyone. We were supposed to die, but you fought back and changed it.” “That was different,” Dominic cut in before Alexander could answer his brother. “The decision to destroy us was made by an Alpha driven by personal interests. We were never destined for death, nor was Alexander destined to challenge him for control of the Pack, as Damon feared.” “He should have killed him anyway,” Sebastian said bitterly. “What he did to us, what he put Eleonor through… he deserved to die, and his followers deserved to turn on each other afterward to see who would get the—” “Enough! That’s behind us now!” Eleonor snapped, her voice tense. “Alexander said we’d talk about it later. Please, let’s change the subject… and let’s get out of here. My excuse for leaving was that we had to go, and from here Evelyn or Pedro can see the truck.” Pedro… “What do you know about him?” Alexander asked, knowing his brothers would understand who he meant. After one last glance toward the café, he started the truck and headed toward the law firm. “I mean, besides the fact that he works there. I know that much.” “Jealous already?” Sebastian asked teasingly before giving him the information he knew. “Lucky for you, Naomi, the one who tried to cling to you like a tick when you arrived, and who also happens to be your mate’s sister, told us a few things about both of them. According to her, Pedro is twenty-five and your Evelyn’s best friend, business partner, and roommate. He’s gay, so stop growling. You have nothing to worry about. And he openly hates Naomi. That last part is my conclusion after watching the two of them interact.” Okay… Apparently, there was no problem, Alexander thought as he parked in front of the law firm. The truth was, he hadn’t paid much attention to him while they were at the café. And since Pedro had let him follow Evelyn without causing any trouble, he’d unconsciously dismissed him as a threat. It was good to know his instincts hadn’t been wrong. Even so… “And what did she tell you about Evelyn?” he asked, looking at his brother through the rearview mirror. Sebastian, judging by his grin, had been waiting for the question, the bastard. However, it was Eleonor who answered. “Evelyn is twenty-six. She’s single. Naomi went out of her way to make it clear that all she does is cook and spend time with Pedro. I’m not going to waste our time with all the other bullshit her sister said to discredit her in front of us. If you trust my judgment, what matters is that even though I barely know her, I like her.” Single… That makes things easier. “Your Evelyn was almost married,” Dominic suddenly said, drawing everyone’s attention. His eyes were fixed on his phone, presumably looking up the information. “The town’s events blog says she was supposed to marry a man named Michael Jones last year.” “And?” “Then there’s a post about the cancellation of the wedding on the very same day it was supposed to take place. It’s strange. Both posts have comments disabled. That’s not normal for the posts I’ve seen. It must be because…” Dominic stopped speaking and stared at the screen for a moment. Just as Alexander was about to ask what was wrong, he started speaking again. “Poor girl. The bastard fiancé abandoned her and ran off with his mistress on the eve of the wedding.” “What an asshole!” Eleonor exclaimed. “And that’s not even the worst part,” Dominic continued. “The other woman was none other than the tick who was trying to climb all over you from the moment she saw you on the street.” “Her sister?” Eleonor asked in disbelief. “Yes,” Dominic confirmed. “Naomi.”
