Chapter Fourteen: The Alpha's Invitation

510 Words
The tent is warm. Silk walls ripple with candlelight. Scents of sandalwood and spice saturate the air—sweet, heady, disarming. Talia lounges on a low couch, barefoot, her gown undone at one shoulder. She looks like a goddess carved out of smoke and sin. Her golden eyes rake over me as I enter, her smile slow. “No guards,” she says, pouring wine into two cups. “Not even Kael.” “I didn’t come here to fight,” I answer. “No,” she says. “You came to see what kind of woman could make the council sweat.” I stay standing. Talia sips her wine, watching me over the rim. “You’re braver than you look. Or stupider.” I don’t blink. “Sometimes those are the same thing.” A small smirk. She gestures to the couch beside her. “Sit. If I wanted to kill you, I wouldn’t waste silk and cinnamon.” I sit. But I don’t relax. Talia’s voice softens. “You’ve stirred the North like a hornet’s nest. It’s beautiful. Chaotic. But dangerous. Then: “Kael.” The word stings more than it should. “I want to know how far he’ll go to keep you. What he’ll break.” I stiffen. She smiles, predator-smooth. “You didn’t think I’d just hand over secrets, did you? No, darling. I want to test you.” I rise to my feet. “I don’t play games.” “Yes, you do,” she says, standing with catlike grace. “You just don’t know whose rules you’re following.” She circles me—slow, like a wolf scenting blood. “You’ve made enemies by standing beside him. But if you want to survive him, you have to know what he’s capable of. What he’s done. What he’s still doing behind your back.” “What do you mean?” Talia stops behind me. Then presses something cold and metal into my hand. A ring. Simple. Gold. Engraved with a symbol I don’t recognize. “Ask him,” she whispers at my neck. “Ask him who it belonged to.” My pulse hammers. Elira. His past. His secrets. I turn to Talia, but she’s already retreating—wrapping her gown tighter around herself like she’s never been touched by cruelty. “You’re not his weakness,” she says. “You’re his mirror. And mirrors? They crack.” She doesn’t ask me to leave. She doesn’t have to. I walk out into the night—ring clenched in my fist, heart heavy with something I’m not ready to name. Because Kael’s love feels like a storm. But what if the thunder’s hiding something far more dangerous? ---
