The camp is hidden beneath the roots of the valley—tucked into a system of caves swallowed by earth and silence.
It smells of ash and old iron.
Not pack.
Not safe.
Rogue.
Tobias walks ahead of me, the flickering torchlight tracing scars down his back. Each step echoes like a warning: You shouldn’t be here. You can’t unhear this.
The others—the rebels—watch me like I’m a weapon wrapped in velvet. Dangerous. Valuable. Breakable.
One leans in to whisper, “She’s marked.”
Another answers, “So was Elira.”
I bite my tongue until it bleeds.
Finally, Tobias stops inside a central chamber. Torches circle the stone walls. A map stretches across the back—territories, marked with claw and ink. Red string ties the Northern stronghold to names I don’t recognize.
And in the center?
Kael’s crest.
Clawed through.
“I didn’t bring you here for revenge,” Tobias says, turning to me. “I brought you here for truth.”
“Then start talking,” I growl.
He points to the map.
“This isn’t just about territory. Kael’s war wasn’t waged to protect the North—it was to consolidate power. Every alliance Elira made, he crushed. Every Alpha who resisted him? Dead. And the worst part? He didn’t do it alone.”
“What are you saying?”
“Elira didn’t die in battle,” Tobias says.
I freeze.
“She was sacrificed. Given to the Council in exchange for Kael’s seat at the High Table.”
“No,” I whisper. “No, he said—he told me she was ambushed—”
“She was,” Tobias says bitterly. “Because he set the trap.”
My knees weaken.
Tobias steps closer.
“She found out. That’s why she gave Talia the ring. A last message. A failsafe. She trusted the wrong people. She thought Kael loved her.”
My chest cracks open.
“Why should I believe you?” I rasp. “You disappeared. You abandoned him.”
“I didn’t run,” he growls. “I was exiled when I refused to help bury her body in lies.”
The walls close in.
Everything I know—every kiss, every oath, every scar Kael wore for me—it all feels poisoned now.
“You still love him,” Tobias says softly.
I don’t answer.
Because the ache in my chest tells the truth.
But then he says, “And that’s exactly why he’ll destroy you. Just like he did her.”
I stand there—shaking, bleeding, burning—with the weight of betrayal crushing me.
But one thing hardens in my bones:
I will not die quietly.
If Kael wants to keep his throne…
He’ll have to face the woman he turned into a storm.
