INTERMITTENT BLINKS of light infiltrated my closed lids, flashing a pink Morse code at my aching eyes. I had no idea how long I attempted sleep—an hour, or so, at a guess, but no matter how much I begged the spiralling thoughts to depart my mind, no reprieve arrived.
