23 Silence whistled through my ears at a much higher pitch than any of the shouts had. Those around me appeared to be waiting for something, as though poised on a pivotal moment in time. I removed my muzzle from Brook’s throat and sniffed her face. At the soft breaths that warmed my nose, I let out a sigh and lifted my gaze to Catherine. Something within her expression told me my charade hadn’t gone unnoticed, and the small pump of her fists at her waist sent an unspoken urge I struggled to interpret.
