Coffee and Complications

824 Words
The rest of the morning passed quickly. Elena paid close attention during her lectures, filling pages of her notebook with neat handwriting. When the professor dismissed the class, Chloe stretched her arms. “My brain officially hurts.” Elena laughed. “It wasn’t that bad.” “It was torture.” The two girls walked into the hallway with the crowd. “I need coffee,” Chloe declared. “You always need coffee.” “Exactly.” As they headed toward the campus café, Elena’s phone vibrated. ❤️ Ethan “I’ll be right back,” Elena told Chloe. She stepped outside the building and answered. “Hi.” “How’s your first day?” Ethan asked. “So far, so good.” “Made any friends?” “My roommate, Chloe.” “Anyone else?” Elena thought for a moment. “I met a senior named Noah, and another student named Damian.” Ethan smiled. “Damian?” “He’s my classmate.” “Good. I’m glad you’re meeting people.” Elena leaned against the wall. “I miss you.” “I miss you too.” “When are you coming to visit?” “Saturday, if my classes don’t run late.” “I’ll be waiting.” “I know.” “I love you.” “I love you more.” They stayed on the phone for another minute before hanging up. Elena smiled to herself. She felt lucky. Long-distance wasn’t easy, but Ethan always made her feel loved. She slipped her phone into her pocket and walked back inside. She didn’t notice Damian standing at the end of the hallway. He hadn’t heard the conversation. But he had seen the smile on her face. And somehow… It bothered him. The campus café was overflowing with students. Every table was occupied. “Great,” Chloe groaned. “Where are we supposed to sit?” Just then… A familiar voice spoke behind them. “You can sit here.” Elena turned. Damian stood beside a table with two empty chairs. Mason and Ryan sat across from him. Chloe’s eyes widened. “Oh…” Damian looked at Elena. “It’s the only table left.” Elena hesitated. Before she could answer, Chloe whispered, “If we don’t take it, we’ll be standing.” Elena nodded politely. “Thank you.” The girls sat down. For a few moments… The table was quiet. Then Ryan smiled. “So, Elena…” “How are you liking Westbridge?” “It’s beautiful.” “Still getting lost?” Elena laughed. “Only twice today.” Damian smirked. “That’s an improvement.” She smiled back. Mason watched the exchange carefully. Something about Damian felt… Different. Normally, he flirted without effort. Today, he was actually listening. Actually paying attention. “So,” Damian asked. “What’s your favorite coffee?” “I don’t drink coffee.” He looked surprised. “No?” “I prefer hot chocolate.” Ryan laughed. “That’s the most innocent answer I’ve ever heard.” Elena shrugged with a smile. “I’ve just never liked coffee.” “I know a place just outside campus that makes amazing hot chocolate,” Damian said. “You should try it sometime.” Before Elena could answer… Her phone buzzed again. A photo lit up the screen. It was Ethan. Smiling. Standing beside his university’s entrance sign. Damian noticed the wallpaper. His smile faded almost instantly. “Your boyfriend?” he asked quietly. Elena nodded without hesitation. “Yeah.” “We’ve been together for almost a year.” There wasn’t a trace of doubt in her voice. Only pride. Only love. For the first time since making the bet… Damian realized this wasn’t going to be easy. Not because Elena was impossible. But because she was genuinely happy. Later that afternoon… Damian sat alone on the hood of his motorcycle. Ryan walked over. “You look like you lost.” “I haven’t.” “You don’t sound very confident anymore.” Damian stared across campus. “I thought she was just another girl.” “And?” “She’s not.” Ryan folded his arms. “So you’re giving up?” Damian looked at him. A slow smile returned to his face. “I never give up.” He climbed onto his motorcycle. “But this…” He started the engine. “…is going to take patience.” As he rode away, he didn’t notice Elena watching from the library steps. She smiled politely and gave him a small wave. Damian lifted two fingers from the handlebars in return before disappearing through the campus gates. Elena turned back toward the library, thinking he seemed kinder than the rumors suggested. Damian, meanwhile, couldn’t stop thinking about the picture on her phone. For the first time in years… Winning a bet felt less important than understanding the girl he was supposed to break.
