LANEY I wake up, feeling groggy. Looking around the room I’m in. I don’t recognise anything. I squeeze my eyes closed tightly hoping my throbbing head will ease. Opening them again I take in my new surroundings. A dark room, no Windows. A dull warm light bulb hanging from the plastered ceiling, illuminating only a small section of the room. There’s no furniture here, just one hard single bed which I’m on, against the back wall, no toilet, no washing facilities. Nothing. The bed is hard, uncomfortable. A single metal frame with just one single dirty mattress on. No bottom sheet, no quilt. No pillow. Nothing. It’s cold in here also, my arms and legs are covered in goosebumps. I can’t tell if they’re from the cold air or the fear as slowly the memories come flooding back. My head shoots up as I hear the high pitched scrape of metal as the heavy iron door unlocks from the outside. I lay back down quickly and pretend to be asleep. Hoping whoever it is will fall for it. I’m aware of who it is as soon as they enter the room. His presence is too strong to not know. He’s here. And I bet any money he’s pissed. I’m scared to move, he might actually believe I’m sleeping as I’m frozen in fear. I forget to breathe I’m that terrified. He walks closer to me, I hear his footsteps getting louder. Echoing through the cold empty room. “Leave us.” He demands and I hear the door shut heavily behind us. I still lie with my back facing him, my eyes closed tightly. He chuckles darkly “I know your not asleep.” I continue to pretend. Ignoring his statement. “You know I don’t like being ignored Laney.” This time I can sense the irritation in his voice. I try to sit up but I can’t physically move. I’m frozen to the spot. The replay of him killing that boy goes over and over in my mind. The smirk, the no hesitation. Suddenly my veins start to pump what feels like lava around my body. The heat builds and builds. The anger, the hatred, the frustration. I sit up slowly, turning around so I can face this demon. He looks at me quizzically. He’s struggling to work me out. I can see it in his eyes. He doesn’t know how to approach this. I will use that to my advantage. “You ran away.” He states. My eyes narrow, “you murdered someone in front of me.” I shoot back, his lips twitch upwards into a half smile but he quickly composes himself. “I’ve murdered many people Laney. You do know who I am.” I shake my head. “I don’t know who YOU are Becker. I don’t even think you know who YOU are.” His facade dropped for a moment, that caught him off guard. He quickly licks his lips. A habit I’ve noticed him do when he’s angry. He suddenly lunges forward grabbing me by my throat. He drags me to my feet and slams me against the wall. Merely inches from my face he glared at me. The fire dancing behind his eyes. He is like a raging bull. I pry at his hand on my throat trying to get him to release me. I struggle to breathe. Panic setting in ever so slightly but I try to remain a cool expression. I don’t want him to know he scares me. I never want to satisfy him by showing him I’m weak. I must appear strong. I clearly hit a nerve there. “YOU DO NOT KNOW ME…” a devilish smirk takes over his face. He leans in closely, I can feel his breath on my face, his lips brush against mine. His eyes dart down then back up to mine “but don’t worry, I’ll make sure you know exactly who your dealing with.” With that he lets go of me. I fall to the floor gasping for air. He turns on his heel and walks out, slamming the iron door and locking it. I sit on the floor, my hand gently caressing my throat. I breathe slowly I’m and out trying to regulate my body. “I’ll make sure you know exactly who your dealing with.” That statement unnerves something within me. The anxiety building in the pit of my stomach, I feel a cold sweat take over. Tears brimming in my eyes. I swallow hard as I repeat his promise in my mind over and over. I have a feeling I’m about to discover what Becker Ramono is all about. And I fear it’s something I don’t want to discover. I hope Becker understands. Once that door has been opened, it cannot be shut.
