Episode 17: Henry

A week later…..

Maria proved to be an asset to this pack. Her healing capabilities were more than our healers. They were now learning from her and the magic she possessed. She easily fell into the Beta position with her mate. She was human so Damien couldn’t mark her or she’d bleed out and die. I walked to the hospital wing to check on Lydia and Henry. My Luna was already there checking in on them. I smiled at the picture in front of me. She was everything and more I had hoped for in a mate. She was getting up as I was coming in. She smiled at me and mind linked with me.

“Henry is fine. I’d like to softly interrogate Lydia some more. Something seems off about her, but I don’t want her to know we suspect her for something. Visit with them and meet me in the kitchen when you are done, my love. Then you can get back to work.”

I nodded and kissed her forehead. She looked back at us as she walked out.

I looked at Henry with worry in my eyes. “How are you feeling Hen? How are you doing too my friend?”

Henry looked like a shell of a man. I wasn’t anticipating what he said and then it all made sense.

“I’m recovering although Alpha I wish I had died too.” His voice shook as tears escaped and ran down his cheeks. “Mike, Mike was my mate. Alpha, my mate is dead.” He started to sob. All I could do was hold him as he cried and grieved the loss of his mate.

“We got the traitor, Henry. He died. Mike’s death has been avenged.” I said as soothingly as I could to my friend as I held him while he cried.

Henry pulled away and laid back on his bed. “I don’t know why we felt the need to keep it a secret, but we did. I wish we didn’t. I loved him so much and now I just want to die. Mike wouldn’t want that, but that’s how I feel.” He looked at me with swollen eyes. “The lives of our Luna and Beta’s mate were threatened. Your unborn children were threatened. When our Luna presented what she was doing I was shocked and angry that someone in my kitchen would do such a thing!” Henry’s voice was starting to get elevated as he continued on and I listened. “WHY WOULD SOMEONE DO THIS?! FOR WHAT PURPOSE?! Money?! Power?! It’s so stupid! All they had to do was a petition to you and the council to start their own pack and you would have done it without a blink of an eye with a substantial amount of money to get started, but no one is smart enough to do so! Instead, they just kill and poison and hide in front of our faces!” He looked at me with eyes wide open. “Who were the women Alpha? How is the pregnant one? Mike knew it wasn’t our Luna, but he protected her just the same.”

I sighed. “Henry, you’re absolutely right about everything. I don’t know why wolves or people do the things they do when it can be done in a much easier way. As for the women….” My voice trailed off. This was going to pain him even more, but I continued on and was here for the explosion that was about to happen. “Your sister was killed. Mike’s sister is the pregnant woman and is safe now.”

Henry and Mike’s parents had come in as I had said this to Henry. Henry screamed in agony. I started to cry for my friend and watched helplessly as he uncontrollably and inconsolably cried. All parents rushed to hug him, kiss him and soothe him as much as possible. I got up off of the bed when they did this and watched while tears soaked my own face. Just then a small hug around my waist caught my attention. It was Mike’s sister, Alisa. She was very pregnant and beautiful. She let me go and wiped my tears away. She forced a smile and patted my shoulder as she made her way to Henry and the parents. I watched as she pulled the parents away from Henry. She cupped Henry’s face. He immediately stopped crying and looked her over. I curiously watched him do this. She smiled. “Yours and Mike’s baby is fine Henry. Please, don’t. I need you and so does your baby. Please recover quickly. The funerals are tomorrow evening. Be there.” She kissed his forehead and brought his hand to her swollen belly. I quickly understood that she was the surrogate for them. She looked my way as she made her way back to the exit. “Alpha, can I please stay in the packhouse under your protection until I deliver my brother’s baby?”

“Of course. I will have Victoria help you get into a suitable room. Everything will be tested before you eat or drink anything to ensure your safety.” I looked at Alisa with a smile, but that was the only thing I could muster up. Just then my mate came up. I had smelled her intoxicating scent coming closer while I spoke to Mike’s sister.

“Alisa is it?” Victoria had her hands on her shoulders. She nodded to confirm and Victoria pulled her in for a hug. “I am so sorry for the loss of your brother and sister-in-law. I am glad you are safe. Come with me and we will get you settled in. Are you hungry or thirsty love?” Victoria led Alisa to her new domain. Damien had walked up as they were leaving. He looked at me. Curiosity filled his eyes. I grabbed him and pulled him in for a hug. He was caught off guard, but my Beta hugged me back, and feeling my emotions we cried and mourned the losses in our pack.
