The next day we were on the jet and heading from Canada to Florida. We got there in record time, checked into our hotel, and started mapping everything out. If I missed her in Florida then we would head to Illinois. It only made sense because I’m pretty sure Victoria would want a change of weather and to be honest so did I. If the time came for us to go to Illinois then we would request a visit with the Martinez Pack even though it was now being taken over by my mate and her pack. Damien and I met up with the other Alphas of the surrounding packs to have some lunch by the beach. We learned quickly about Victoria’s influence and why she expanded this way. It was common knowledge that drugs were a big problem here and she had been asked to step in. It was also news to everyone that she was an Alpha female. There was a lot of respect and admiration for her, so much in fact that some of the new Alphas wanted to pay her a visit and see if she was their future Luna. My wolf smiled and laughed at them. Soon enough they would know.
Damien and I were back in our room. We made it a point to get invited to go out dancing and partying with the other packs at night. My Beta was on point when it came to getting information by persuasion. Before we headed out the door we were dressed to the nines. We needed everyone to think our reason for going was to party. Then it was time to go out. We met up with everyone at the local nightclub. We were introduced to more shifter elites and other Alphas and Betas. After about an hour I was introduced to Jason. Jason was Victoria’s Beta. Jason’s eyes narrowed when he met me. I smiled at him because he knew who I was in the wolf shifter world and I’m sure the Gamma informed him of our encounter back in Canada. He didn’t submit though which was interesting because the Gamma and he could be Alphas. He extended his hand to me.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you Alpha Angel Valentino. What brings you to Florida? I don’t recall seeing you at the conference in Canada.” He took a drink of what smelled like whiskey.
“Likewise, Beta Jason of the Green Forest Pack. Warm weather and the nightlife were a needed change from Canada. We just needed some fresh air. We, unfortunately, made it to the conference late, but we made amends for our absence. What brings you here?”
Jason wasn’t fooled and neither was I, but we forced each other to get to know one another. It was a back and forth conversation that turned into a dance. After another hour we were a lot easier and by the third hour, we were inviting each other to each other’s packs, sharing drinks, and laughing. I took a liking to Jason. I could also see he had strong loyalty to his Alpha. I asked him when she would be joining us. He let me know she doesn’t come out much and is usually working or by this time in bed. He let me know she follows a pretty rigid schedule. I shrugged and drank another beer. He eyed me and started to read me. I caught it but shrugged it off. Afterward, I excused myself to use the bathroom. I was buzzed and I knew in an hour I’d be sober again. It felt good to unwind a bit, but I needed to keep my focus. I exited the bathroom and took a step outside. Then, I smelled her.
I looked around the club. I smelled her. She’s here, but I can’t find her. I felt like I was about to lose my mind when Jason grabbed my arm to break the frenzy that was bubbling inside.
“Angel! You alright bro?”
“Yea, sorry. I – I smelled my mate, but I can’t find her” I shook my head to re-focus on my surroundings.
“You’re mate?! Well, who is she? Do you know?” Jason asked me with an inquisitive look on his face, but his eyes gave him away. He knew the answer. I knew he knew who my mate was, but he waited for me to say. I looked at him and my eyes narrowed. Our eyes locked.
“You know who my mate is. Where is she?!” I growled at him with my teeth descending as I shoved him up against the wall. His hands went up with one of them still holding his drink to show he wasn’t going to be aggressive and a smile slid across his face and I wanted to smack it off of him. He was ballsy and he even pushed the envelope with me when he leaned in to speak to just me while the music started to blare.
“Yea, Steve told me, but I don’t know if you are aware big bad Alpha, this isn’t exactly her scene.” I slowly let him go. He took a drink of his whiskey and wiped his mouth. He continued. “She is my sister, my Alpha, and my family. If you can catch her attention you will treat her like the Luna she deserves to be treated like. She is a Queen like no other and if you hurt her, well, it’s not Steve you’ll be worrying about. Not to mention she’s a workaholic, so good luck with that part.” He winked and stood straight up showing me his full height.
I smiled at his being protective of his Alpha. Since my discovery, everyone that has spoken to me has been challenging. Had it been any other time I would’ve ripped out their throats where they stood without a blink of an eye. I was acting differently. I nodded to him in acknowledgment of his forewarning.
“Despite what you’ve said Jason, she’s here. I can smell her, but it’s different. “
“Let it go, man. She doesn’t come out to party. Hell, come to think of it she’s never been out to have fun like this. She’s always working. Come on, let’s get another drink.”
We made our way to the bar. Despite what Jason said I couldn’t shake the feeling and what I smelled. She was here with us and not even her Beta could tell. I turned around to look at the crowd and at that moment a woman walking by bumped into me. I noticed she walked through the crowd quickly. Something was off. Then she looked back and she caught me staring at her leaving. Her eyes widened. It was her! She spun around and got lost in the crowd. I forced my way through everyone. Jason caught my quick movements and followed me with his eyes to where I was heading. He started moving too. The other Alphas called out to Jason to see where he was going. He laughed and said he was going to get something quick to eat and be right back. They laughed and saluted their beers in his direction. I briefly saw the happening, but still making my way to her. I knew she was here and she wasn’t going to elude me much longer.
I practically tumbled outside after fighting through the crowd of people. A moment later I was scanning the new crowd searching for her. I saw the crowd parting ahead like someone was making their way through a corn maze. Jason was hot on my trail. Not that I cared, but in a way, if she was here it was a way to prove him wrong. Killing two birds with one stone. I told you so was definitely on my tongue once I caught up to her. I was not shy about making my way through the crowd. I could still smell her. I also caught on to fear. Fear of being caught? My smile widened. Oh baby I’m so close to catching you. My wolf sniffed the air. If we weren’t surrounded by so many humans I would’ve howled right then and there. My adrenaline was pumping at this cat and mouse game. I kept moving. She wasn’t far, then her scent disappeared. I stopped dead in my tracks. I felt like I hit an invisible wall and then panic ensued. I heard my name being called out. I spun around to find Jason not far behind yelling at me.
“Angel! What the hell is it, man?! I told you she isn’t here!”
I ignored him as I continued looking. There is absolutely no way her scent just disappeared, but then I smelled that strange scent again. My wolf helped me follow it. My head snapped in her direction. I found her! Holy s**t she’s small! My smile crept back up and I moved quickly and silently. I didn’t want to be noticed. She thought she got away. HA! I caught up to her from the back. She was resting against the wall. I slowly slid my hand onto her waist and leaned in to growl in her ear. “There you are.” It was the dumbest thing I had ever done because no sooner had I done that, the next thing I knew it was the scene from ‘Miss Congeniality. I folded over so quickly and those few seconds were all she had needed and she was gone. Jason caught up. He was immediately on his phone calling out to someone. Over by the wall of the building both of our heads snapped in the direction of the ringing phone. He walked over and picked it up. The look on his face was priceless as he turned to me in utter disbelief, worry, and anger.
“Okaaaay. What the f**k? Can you smell her still?” His questions were showing signs of distress now.
“No.” Is all I could manage as I rubbed my neck, groin, and face. I re-broke my nose to put it back in place. She was strong and this was a lot more fun than I had anticipated. “She took off on foot. I didn’t expect her to use the ‘SING’ method on me.” I started to laugh. “Well, she obviously proved you wrong, but is she always this fun to chase?”
Jason looked at me with a twisted and confused face like, ‘what is wrong with you’ face. I laughed at his emotional response. Jason got back on the phone and it was with Steve. I could hear Steve without even having to be a werewolf. He started making his way back to our hotel in quick strides. I followed. What the hell was their Alpha doing here without letting herself be known especially to her Beta? Damien would attempt to kick my ass if I ever pulled s**t like this. The fact that she was by herself and had successfully taken over another pack painted a temporary target on her back as well. I was angry at her negligence to her safety. We walked on. When we made it back to the hotel there was a message waiting for Jason at the front desk. Upon reading it his eyes went almost feral and he crumpled the message given to him then looked at me. I didn’t know if he was pissed at me for being right or if he had just received more disturbing news. I guessed it was both.
“It’s not often I’m wrong, but my Alpha was here for the last two days apparently. She is gone. She is on her way to Illinois, and so are we.”
I nodded in agreement and got on the phone with Damien. He was back at the hotel in less than fifteen minutes. I filled him in on what had happened. He laughed. I smacked him upside his head. We spoke to Jason and we met back down in the lobby thirty minutes later to check out. Prior to leaving we scanned the whole building just in case it was another ploy to throw us off of her tracks. Nothing. Jason called Steve and let him know that Victoria was making her way to him. I could still hear him yelling on the phone.
We got to the airport and there were not any immediate and available flights to Illinois, so I got on the phone with one of my buddies and we were in the air by the next hour.
