“Yah, Carter. How ar-”
“Is there anything in the mail.” she abruptly interrupted.
The man behind the counter gave a slight smile, amused at her ergency,“You and I both know Aunt Lucinda and Uncle Anderson aren’t going to respond to your letter. As your cousin, it’s my job to tell you this.”
Carter glared at him,“2nd cousin, Matthew.”
He then responded with an over exaggerated gasp,“Nonetheless.”
Rolling her eyes she sarcastically replied,“Wow, I would have thought that that word was too big to fit in your 4 letter dictionary of words.”
“Your cousin has learned many things from our up-right, respectable family members,” as he said this he placed one hand bent in front of him, grabbing one side of his coat, and putting the other behind him. Then bending just slightly to mock their Kat lineage.
Carter rolled her eyes and handed Mathew a letter.
“What’s this?”
“None of your business.”
“O, come on little miss McAllen. I’m dying to know.”
Crossing her arms she finally gave in,“It’s my application for work in Cazman Fondation.”
Matthew looked at the folded letter then at her,”you do know that place is tough on haft breeds like us?”
Carter went to the door,”Yes, it will certainly be tough. But if I can show Aunt Lucinda and Uncle Anderson that I will nah off my own hand then maybe. If I can convince them, I’ll be accepted under their wing.”
Matthew looked at Carter’s backside with his horror so visible in his eye,”What if it doesn’t work?”
Carter opened the door. Stopping in the frame to reply,”Then I guess I’m just going to have to claw my way up the latter.”
With the last chimes of the bell at the door, Matthew looked back down at the letter. He knew that they would continue to ignore Carter. When she stopped doing their bidding after her mother got sick, completely scorched her gateway to any sort of Kat benefits. To them, that was a stab in the back. When you are an Exeptis you have to choose a side. You aren’t born into one with your whole family. You have to choose one side and completely swear off the other.
Matthew had experienced this with his half sister. She chose his bratich aunt and uncle. She was so close, and now he can barely recognize her. She is completely plastered with power, money, and expensive clothes. Along with a mask of expensive powder and wild, exaggerated colors hiding her true self.
Can he help Carter reach the people that killed his sister?
