But Katkin was not listening to him. She threw up her hand in a slashing motion and Huw fell silent, wondering what she could hear. When she crept towards the back of the barn, he drew his curved dagger and followed behind her, now thoroughly alarmed. The wall seemed solid, yet Katkin seemed to think something lay behind it, for she placed her ear to the boards. “It is probably just rats,” he said, and again she furiously signaled him to be quiet. After dropping down on her knees, she could just see the disturbed pattern of dust on the floor. A trap door, so cunningly fitted the joins were barely visible, lay hidden in the darkness.
