Chapter 2: The Voice Within

1117 Words
The cold night air stood still. Hailey couldn’t move. The tall stranger stood only a few feet away, his silver eyes locked onto hers as if nothing else in the world existed. Around him, the wolves that had moments ago been ready to attack now lay on the ground with their heads lowered. Not one dared to look him in the eyes. The stranger’s chest rose and fell as though he were struggling to believe what he was seeing. His lips parted. “My mate…” Hailey blinked in confusion. “What?” He took one cautious step toward her. “I’ve searched for years…” “No,” Hailey whispered, taking a step back. “You must have mistaken me for someone else.” “You are Hailey.” Her heart skipped a beat. “How do you know my name?” “I know much more than your name.” Fear spread through her body. Who was this man? How did he know her? The stranger noticed the panic in her eyes and softened his expression. “My name is Kaiden.” He bowed his head slightly. “Alpha of the Silver Crescent Pack.” Hailey gasped. Even she had heard stories about him. The strongest Alpha in the Northern Territories. A warrior who had never lost a battle. A leader feared by enemies and respected by every werewolf pack. Why would someone so powerful be standing before her? “I think you’ve made a mistake,” she said, her voice trembling. “I’m nobody.” Kaiden shook his head. “No.” “You are the one the Moon Goddess chose for me.” Before Hailey could answer, a sharp pain exploded inside her head. She cried out and dropped to her knees. It felt as though something inside her was clawing to get out. “No…” She grabbed her chest. “What is happening to me?” Then… A soft feminine voice echoed inside her mind. “Hailey…” She froze. Her breathing stopped. The voice came again. “Can you hear me?” Hailey looked around wildly. “Who’s there?” Kaiden’s eyes widened. He heard her. “Hailey…” “You can hear your wolf.” “My… wolf?” The voice laughed gently. “Finally.” Tears filled Hailey’s eyes. “For sixteen years I’ve waited for you.” “I thought…” “I thought I didn’t have a wolf.” “I’ve always been here.” “Who are you?” “My name is Luna.” Hailey covered her mouth. This couldn’t be real. Every full moon she had prayed. Every birthday she had begged. Every time… There had only been silence. Now the voice she had longed to hear was speaking to her. “I don’t understand.” “You will.” “But not tonight.” Suddenly Luna’s voice became serious. “Danger is coming.” A loud growl echoed through the forest. One of the rogues had disobeyed Kaiden’s order. With blazing red eyes, it lunged toward Hailey. Everything happened in seconds. Kaiden moved faster than she could see. His body blurred through the darkness. A deafening crack echoed through the trees. The rogue was thrown across the forest, crashing into several trees before collapsing unconscious. The remaining wolves whimpered in fear. Kaiden’s Alpha aura exploded through the forest. “Leave.” His command shook the ground. Every rogue immediately fled into the darkness. Silence returned. Kaiden turned back to Hailey. She stared at him in complete shock. He had defeated a powerful rogue with one strike. “You’re safe now,” he said softly. But Hailey barely heard him. The pain in her head grew stronger. Luna’s voice faded. “Forgive me…” “You aren’t ready…” Darkness swallowed everything. ⸻ When Hailey opened her eyes again, sunlight streamed through a nearby window. She blinked slowly. The smell of herbs filled the room. She was lying in a bed. White curtains surrounded her. “She’s awake!” An elderly woman hurried toward her. “You gave us quite a scare.” Hailey looked around. “Where am I?” “The Moon Shadow Pack hospital.” Her memories rushed back. The wolves. The stranger. The voice. She sat upright. “Where’s Alpha Kaiden?” The healer smiled. “So you remember him.” Before she could answer, the hospital door burst open. Aunt Emma rushed inside. “Hailey!” She hugged her tightly. “Oh, thank the Moon Goddess.” “I was so worried.” Hailey smiled weakly. “I’m okay.” Emma pulled back, searching her face. “What happened in the forest?” Hailey hesitated. No one would believe her. “I…” Before she could answer, another voice interrupted. “She’s lying.” Rhea stood in the doorway with folded arms. “I heard everything.” She smirked. “The entire pack is talking about it.” Hailey frowned. “Talking about what?” Rhea’s smile disappeared. “They say Alpha Kaiden claimed you as his mate.” The room fell silent. Hailey’s heart pounded. “It isn’t true.” “Oh?” Rhea stepped closer. “Then why did the strongest Alpha in the Northern Territories carry you back himself?” Hailey had no answer. Even she didn’t understand. Rhea glared at her. “It should have been me.” For years Rhea had dreamed of becoming Luna of a powerful pack. Now the cursed girl she hated most had become the center of attention. She couldn’t accept it. “You stole my future.” Emma stepped between them. “That’s enough.” Rhea scoffed. “You’ll regret this.” She stormed out. Hailey looked at her aunt. “What is happening?” Emma avoided her eyes. “I don’t know.” But Hailey noticed the fear on her face. It wasn’t confusion. It was recognition. As though Emma had been expecting this day all along. That evening, after Hailey returned to her cottage, she sat alone by the window. Everything had changed. She finally had a wolf. A mysterious Alpha claimed she was his mate. And somehow… Her aunt seemed to know more than she was willing to say. The wind carried another distant howl through the forest. Then Luna whispered once more. “This is only the beginning.” Hailey looked toward the full moon rising above the trees. For the first time in her life… She realized the greatest secret about her wasn’t that she had no wolf. It was that someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure no one ever discovered she had one at all. …End of Chapter 2
