The first rays of dawn stretched across the Moon Shadow Pack, but no one celebrated the new day.
The village that had once echoed with laughter now stood wrapped in anxious silence. Warriors patrolled every entrance, their eyes fixed on the forest beyond the walls. Every shadow seemed like a threat.
Hailey stood outside the Alpha’s house, unable to shake the vision she had seen.
The burning palace.
The woman with the silver crown.
The crimson-eyed king.
Most of all…
The baby wrapped in a silver blanket.
She knew, deep within her heart, that the child had been her.
“You’re awake early.”
Hailey turned to see Kael approaching with two steaming cups of herbal tea.
“I couldn’t sleep.”
“I didn’t expect you to.”
He handed her one of the cups.
She accepted it quietly.
For several moments, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Hailey broke the silence.
“Was that vision real?”
Kael stared toward the forest.
“Yes.”
“So my parents…”
“They died protecting you.”
Tears filled her eyes once again.
“I never even got the chance to know them.”
“No.”
“But they knew you.”
Hailey looked at him.
“They loved you before you were even born.”
A lump formed in her throat.
“They believed you would bring hope back to our people.”
She lowered her gaze.
“I don’t feel like hope.”
Kael smiled sadly.
“Neither did your father.”
Her eyes widened.
“What?”
“When King Orion first became king, he doubted himself every day.”
“He did?”
Kael nodded.
“He believed he wasn’t strong enough.”
“What changed?”
“He learned that true strength isn’t about never being afraid.”
“It’s about standing anyway.”
Hailey fell silent.
Those words settled deep inside her heart.
⸻
Later that morning, Elder Miriam arrived outside the Alpha’s house.
She wore flowing silver robes embroidered with ancient moon symbols.
Around her neck hung a glowing crystal.
“It’s time.”
Hailey frowned.
“For what?”
“Your first lesson.”
Luna hurried over, excitement shining in her eyes.
“Can I come?”
Elder Miriam smiled.
“Only as an observer.”
The three of them followed the Elder deep into the forest until they reached a hidden clearing surrounded by towering ancient trees.
In the center stood a circle of white stones unlike anything Hailey had ever seen.
Each stone carried strange symbols that shimmered faintly beneath the sunlight.
“What is this place?”
Elder Miriam smiled.
“This is the Circle of the First Wolves.”
Hailey slowly stepped closer.
“It feels…”
She placed a hand over her chest.
“…alive.”
“It is.”
“The Moon Goddess blessed this place long before our packs existed.”
Hailey swallowed nervously.
“What happens now?”
“You’ll meet your wolf.”
She blinked.
“I already have.”
“You’ve heard her voice.”
The Elder shook her head gently.
“But today…”
“…you will truly meet.”
Hailey’s heartbeat quickened.
⸻
Elder Miriam instructed Hailey to stand in the center of the stone circle.
“Close your eyes.”
She obeyed.
“Slow your breathing.”
The sounds of the forest gradually disappeared.
Birds.
Wind.
Footsteps.
Everything faded.
Darkness surrounded her.
Then…
Silver light appeared beneath her feet.
The darkness melted away.
Hailey found herself standing inside an endless field beneath an enormous glowing moon.
The air shimmered with magic.
“This isn’t real…”
“It is.”
A familiar voice echoed behind her.
Hailey turned slowly.
Standing only a few feet away was a breathtaking silver wolf.
Her fur sparkled like moonlight across fresh snow.
One eye glowed brilliant blue.
The other gleamed silver.
Exactly like Hailey’s own.
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
“It’s you…”
The wolf smiled.
“I’ve waited sixteen years.”
Hailey slowly walked closer.
“I thought you were only a voice.”
“I was.”
“Until you accepted me.”
Hailey reached out with trembling fingers.
The wolf gently lowered her head.
The moment Hailey touched her fur…
A wave of warmth rushed through her entire body.
Memories flashed before her eyes.
Running through forests.
Laughing as a little girl.
Watching the stars.
Dreams she had forgotten.
The wolf spoke softly.
“My name is Lyra.”
Hailey smiled through her tears.
“Lyra.”
“I am part of you.”
“And you are part of me.”
Hailey wrapped her arms around the wolf’s neck.
“I thought I was alone.”
“You never were.”
“I just couldn’t hear you.”
Lyra gently nuzzled her face.
“I’ve always been here.”
⸻
Suddenly the peaceful sky darkened.
The glowing moon disappeared behind black clouds.
Lyra immediately stepped in front of Hailey.
Her ears flattened.
“They found us.”
Hailey looked around.
“Who?”
Dark mist rolled across the field.
From within it emerged enormous wolves with glowing crimson eyes.
There were dozens of them.
Each wore black armor marked with the same symbol Hailey had seen in her vision.
The Shadow King’s crest.
One stepped forward.
His voice was cold.
“So…”
“The Moon Heir finally remembers.”
Hailey instinctively stepped backward.
“Who are you?”
The wolf smiled cruelly.
“A warning.”
Without another word, every shadow wolf charged.
Lyra roared.
“Run!”
Hailey didn’t move.
Instead…
Something deep inside her awakened.
The crescent mark on her wrist burst into brilliant silver light.
The ground trembled.
The ancient stones surrounding the clearing outside the vision began to glow.
Elder Miriam’s eyes widened.
“It’s happening…”
Kael stepped forward.
“What is?”
“The Moon’s Trial.”
Inside the vision, the silver light exploded outward like a wave.
The charging shadow wolves were thrown backward.
Their howls echoed across the endless field.
Lyra looked at Hailey with pride.
“You’ve taken your first step.”
Hailey stared at the glowing light surrounding her hands.
“What… am I becoming?”
Lyra smiled.
“Exactly who you were born to be.”
