The silver light slowly faded.
Hailey found herself standing once again in the endless moonlit field, her chest rising and falling with every hurried breath.
The shadow wolves had vanished.
Only Lyra remained.
The silver wolf walked toward her, her eyes filled with pride.
“You passed.”
Hailey frowned.
“Passed what?”
“The Moon’s Trial.”
“I don’t understand.”
Lyra sat beside her.
“The Moon Goddess does not give her gifts to those who seek power.”
“She gives them to those who protect others.”
Hailey lowered her eyes.
“I wasn’t trying to fight.”
“I know.”
“You were trying to survive.”
A gentle breeze swept across the glowing field.
“The trial wasn’t about strength.”
“It was about your heart.”
Hailey looked at Lyra.
“So… those wolves weren’t real?”
“They were.”
Her smile disappeared.
“The Shadow King’s magic reached this place.”
Hailey felt a chill run through her body.
“So he can find me?”
“Not yet.”
“But every time your powers awaken…”
“…he feels them.”
The thought sent fear racing through her.
“I’ll put everyone in danger.”
Lyra stepped closer.
“No.”
“The Shadow King chose this war long before you were born.”
Before Hailey could respond, the moonlight around them began to fade.
“You’re waking up,” Lyra whispered.
Hailey reached for her.
“Wait.”
“When will I see you again?”
Lyra smiled warmly.
“Whenever you listen.”
The world dissolved into silver light.
⸻
Hailey’s eyes flew open.
She was lying inside the ancient stone circle.
Luna knelt beside her, tears streaming down her face.
“Hailey!”
She threw her arms around her best friend.
“You scared me!”
Hailey smiled weakly.
“I’m okay.”
Kael helped her sit up.
“You were unconscious for nearly an hour.”
“An hour?”
“It felt much longer.”
Elder Miriam stepped forward.
“The Moon accepted you.”
Hailey looked down.
The crescent mark on her wrist had changed.
It now shimmered with silver light even in daylight.
“What does this mean?”
“It means your bond with Lyra is complete.”
Kael smiled.
“You are no longer simply a wolf.”
“You are becoming the Moon Guardian.”
Before Hailey could ask what that meant, a loud horn echoed through the forest.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Every warrior froze.
Kael’s expression darkened.
“That isn’t a patrol signal.”
A warrior burst into the clearing, panting heavily.
“Alpha!”
“What happened?”
“The western border has been attacked!”
Everyone’s faces turned pale.
“Who attacked?”
The warrior swallowed.
“They wore black cloaks.”
“They carried the Shadow King’s crest.”
Hailey felt her heart sink.
“They’re here…”
Kael immediately drew his sword.
“How many?”
“At least fifty.”
Gasps filled the clearing.
“They didn’t cross the border.”
“They destroyed one of our watchtowers…”
“…then disappeared.”
Luna frowned.
“Why would they leave?”
Elder Miriam answered quietly.
“They’re sending a message.”
⸻
Within minutes the entire Moon Shadow Pack gathered in the village square.
Families held their children close.
Warriors sharpened their weapons.
Fear spread through the crowd like wildfire.
Kael climbed onto the stone platform.
“Our enemies have made the first move.”
Murmurs spread among the pack.
“But hear me.”
His voice echoed across the square.
“They attacked our borders.”
“They did not break our spirit.”
The warriors roared in agreement.
“No matter what comes…”
“We stand together.”
Hailey watched from the front of the crowd.
Only a few days ago she had believed she didn’t belong here.
Now these people were preparing to risk their lives for her.
The weight of that truth settled heavily on her heart.
⸻
That evening, Kael invited Hailey, Luna, and Elder Miriam into the council chamber.
An old map covered the table.
Red stones marked the surrounding packs.
Black stones marked enemy sightings.
Kael pointed toward the mountains.
“Our scouts tracked the attackers here.”
Hailey studied the map.
“What’s there?”
“The Black Fortress.”
“The Shadow King’s home.”
Silence filled the room.
Luna finally spoke.
“Has anyone ever gone there?”
Kael nodded once.
“And returned?”
His silence answered the question.
Hailey took a deep breath.
“If he’s coming for me…”
“Then hiding won’t stop him.”
Kael looked at her sharply.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying I need to become stronger.”
Elder Miriam smiled proudly.
“Exactly.”
“The Moon Heir cannot hide forever.”
Hailey lifted her chin.
“Then train me.”
Kael searched her face for a long moment before nodding.
“Very well.”
“Tomorrow…”
“…your real training begins.”
⸻
Far away, beyond the forests and mountains, thunder rolled over a towering fortress carved into black stone.
Inside the great hall, hundreds of wolves knelt before a massive throne.
The Shadow King stood before them.
His crimson eyes burned with cold determination.
“The border attack was successful.”
A general bowed.
“The Moon Shadow Pack is preparing for war.”
The Shadow King smiled.
“Good.”
“They’re doing exactly what I wanted.”
Another warrior stepped forward.
“My King…”
“The heir survived the Moon’s Trial.”
His smile widened.
“So the bloodline truly lives.”
He turned toward the moon shining through the fortress window.
“Lydia…”
“Orion…”
“You failed to destroy my dream.”
His voice became colder.
“But your daughter will finish it for you.”
Drawing his black sword, he raised it high.
“Prepare the army.”
Thousands of wolves howled in response.
“The next time we march…”
“…we will not stop at the border.”
He looked toward the distant moon.
“We will bring the Moon Heir to her knees.”
Far away in Moon Shadow Pack, Hailey suddenly felt a cold shiver run through her body.
Lyra’s voice echoed inside her mind.
“The war has begun.”
Hailey looked up at the full moon, determination replacing her fear
“Then we’ll be ready.”
