Chapter 5 – The Alpha’s Protection

The morning sun bathed the hidden valley in soft golden light, but Hailey found no peace in its warmth. She stood outside the stone fortress, staring at the mountains that surrounded the sanctuary. The place was beautiful, yet she couldn’t shake the feeling that danger was closing in.
Luna stirred within her.
“This place is safe… for now.”
Hailey sighed. “I wish I could believe that.”
Behind her, the heavy wooden doors creaked open.
“You’re awake early,” Kaiden said, walking toward her with his hands tucked into his pockets.
“I couldn’t sleep.”
“I expected that.”
She turned to face him.
“Everyone keeps calling me the Blood Moon Princess. I don’t even know what that means.”
Kaiden’s expression grew serious.
“It means your bloodline is older than every pack in existence. Long ago, the Blood Moon family united wolves and Lycans under one kingdom. They were respected for their wisdom, strength, and ability to keep peace.”
“What happened to them?”
“They were betrayed.”
His voice was low.
“Greed destroyed the kingdom. Your family was hunted almost to extinction. Your parents escaped with you, but they knew your enemies would never stop searching.”
Hailey lowered her eyes.
“So my mother spent her whole life running.”
“She sacrificed everything so you could have a chance to live.”
The words hit Hailey harder than she expected.
For years she had wondered why her mother was always afraid, why they moved from place to place, why she never allowed Hailey to make close friends.
Now she finally understood.
Every decision had been made to protect her.

Later that morning, Kaiden led Hailey to a large clearing behind the fortress.
More than twenty wolves stood waiting.
Some looked curious.
Others looked doubtful.
One young warrior folded his arms.
“She’s supposed to be our future queen?”
Another scoffed.
“She doesn’t even know how to fight.”
The whispers spread through the crowd.
Hailey felt her cheeks burn.
Kaiden stepped forward.
“Silence.”
The clearing became quiet instantly.
“She has survived eighteen years while the strongest enemies in our world searched for her. Never mistake inexperience for weakness.”
The warriors lowered their heads.
Kaiden handed Hailey a wooden practice sword.
“Today, your training begins.”
She looked at the weapon nervously.
“I’ve never used one before.”
“I know.”
The first lesson was balance.
The second was patience.
The third was learning how to fall without getting hurt.
By noon, Hailey had landed on the ground so many times that every part of her body ached.
The warriors tried not to laugh.
Kaiden simply offered his hand.
“Again.”
She stood.
Again.
She failed.
Again.
She stood.
Hours passed.
Slowly, her movements became steadier.
Luna guided her instincts.
By sunset, Kaiden finally smiled.
“You’re learning.”
Hailey laughed tiredly.
“I think I’m learning how painful training is.”
Even some of the warriors smiled.
For the first time since arriving, Hailey felt like she belonged.

Stories and laughter filled the hall.
Hailey watched families eating together.
Children chased one another between the tables.
It reminded her of everything she had lost.
A little girl approached her shyly.
“Are you really the Blood Moon Princess?”
Hailey smiled softly.
“I guess I am.”
The little girl reached into her pocket and handed Hailey a small wildflower.
“My mummy says heroes need hope.”
Hailey accepted it with trembling hands.
“Thank you.”
The simple gesture nearly brought tears to her eyes.

Far beyond the sanctuary, hidden in the shadows of an ancient castle, the Lycan King listened as another scout knelt before him.
“My King, we’ve discovered the location of the hidden valley.”
The King’s crimson eyes narrowed.
“So Kaiden has been hiding her there.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
A cold smile spread across his face.
“Interesting.”
He rose from his throne and walked toward the massive window overlooking his kingdom.
“The Alpha believes those mountains can protect her.”
He laughed quietly.
“They’ve forgotten who I am.”
He turned toward his commander.
“Prepare one hundred elite warriors.”
The commander bowed immediately.
“At once, my King.”
The Lycan King looked toward the full moon rising in the night sky.
“Protect her while you can, Kaiden.”
His voice was calm, but filled with menace.
“Because soon… I’ll come for what belongs to me.”
As thunder rolled across the distant mountains, Hailey stood outside the fortress, unaware that an army had already begun marching toward her new home.
The peaceful life she had just begun was about to be shattered.
