Chapter 6 – The Lycan King’s Hunt

829 Words
Dark clouds gathered over the mountains, covering the moon that had guided the wolves for generations. An uneasy silence settled over the hidden valley. Even the birds had stopped singing. Hailey stood on the fortress wall, staring into the endless forest below. Something felt wrong. Luna’s voice echoed inside her mind. “Danger is near.” Before Hailey could respond, a loud horn echoed through the valley. The peaceful atmosphere disappeared instantly. Warriors rushed from every direction, fastening swords to their belts and shifting into massive wolves. The fortress, once filled with laughter, transformed into a place preparing for war. Kaiden climbed the stairs to the watchtower. “What happened?” Hailey asked. “A scout has returned.” Moments later, a young warrior burst through the gate, breathing heavily. His clothes were torn, and blood stained his shoulder. “They’re coming,” he gasped. Kaiden steadied him. “Who?” “The Lycan King’s army.” The words froze everyone in place. “How far away?” Kaiden asked. “They’ll reach the valley before sunrise.” A heavy silence followed. Kaiden looked at his warriors. “Sound the alarm. Prepare every fighter.” The bells of the fortress rang through the mountains. Women hurried children into the underground shelters while warriors gathered weapons and supplies. Torches were lit along the walls, and guards took their positions. Hailey watched the panic around her. “This is because of me,” she whispered. Kaiden turned toward her. “No.” “They’re here for me.” “They’re here because evil never stops chasing power. Don’t carry that burden alone.” Despite his words, guilt weighed heavily on her heart. ⸻ Later that night, Kaiden led Hailey into a quiet chamber beneath the fortress. In the center of the room rested an ancient stone altar carved with the symbol of a crimson moon. “What is this place?” she asked. “It belongs to your bloodline.” He placed an old leather-bound book on the altar. “My mother kept this safe for eighteen years.” Hailey carefully opened it. Inside were handwritten pages, family records, and faded drawings. Tucked between the pages was a letter addressed to her. Her hands trembled as she unfolded it. “My dearest Hailey,” “If you are reading this, then the truth has finally found you. I wanted nothing more than for you to grow up as an ordinary girl, but fate had other plans. Never let fear decide who you become. Your strength does not come from the title you carry—it comes from the kindness in your heart and the courage to stand even when you’re afraid.” “Trust Kaiden. He promised your father and me that he would protect you, no matter the cost.” “And remember this: true leaders fight not because they seek power, but because they refuse to abandon those who cannot protect themselves.” “I will always love you.” ”—Mother.” Tears rolled down Hailey’s cheeks. She held the letter tightly against her chest. “I miss her so much.” Kaiden lowered his head respectfully. “So do I.” ⸻ As midnight approached, the scouts returned with grim news. “They’ve surrounded the valley.” Kaiden climbed onto the fortress wall. Hundreds of glowing eyes stared from the darkness below. The Lycan King’s army had arrived. At the front of the enormous force stood a tall figure dressed in black armor. Even from a distance, his presence demanded attention. His golden eyes locked onto the fortress. Locked onto Hailey. For a brief moment, time seemed to stand still. Hailey couldn’t explain why, but when their eyes met, a strange feeling rushed through her—not only fear, but recognition. Luna suddenly spoke. “He is stronger than anyone we’ve ever faced.” The Lycan King smiled faintly. “So,” he murmured to himself, “the Blood Moon Princess lives.” He raised one hand. Behind him, hundreds of warriors prepared for battle. Kaiden stepped in front of Hailey. “You stay behind me.” “No,” Hailey replied, gripping the sword she had trained with every day. “If this fight is because of me, then I won’t hide while others risk their lives.” Kaiden studied her face for a moment. Then, slowly, he nodded. “The frightened girl I met years ago is gone.” Hailey took a deep breath. “I’m still afraid.” “Good,” Kaiden said. “Courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s choosing to stand despite it.” A deafening war horn echoed across the valley. The Lycan King drew his sword and pointed it toward the fortress. “Attack!” The earth shook as the Lycan army charged forward. Hailey tightened her grip on her sword, her heart pounding in her chest. The battle for her future had begun. End of Chapter 6.
