The message lay in Hailey’s trembling hands. “The heir belongs to the Shadow King. We are coming for her.” The words seemed to burn into her mind. She looked up slowly. “So… it’s true.” Kael nodded grimly. “It is.” “They’re coming for me.” “They have been searching for you for sixteen years.” Silence filled the ancient chamber. Luna moved closer and gently held Hailey’s hand. “We won’t let them take you.” Hailey looked at her best friend, forcing a weak smile. “I don’t want anyone getting hurt because of me.” Luna squeezed her hand tighter. “You’ve spent your whole life protecting everyone else’s feelings. It’s our turn to protect you.” Before Hailey could reply, the sound of a horn echoed across the village. One long blast. Then another. Kael’s face hardened. “The eastern watchtower.” A warrior burst through the doorway. “Alpha!” “What is it?” “Our scouts have spotted wolves near the border.” “How many?” “Nearly thirty.” Gasps filled the room. “They’re not attacking,” the warrior continued. “They’re watching.” Kael immediately understood. “They’re testing our defences.” He turned toward his Beta. “Rowan.” The tall warrior stepped forward. “Yes, Alpha.” “Increase every patrol.” “Already done.” “No one enters or leaves the village without my permission.” Rowan bowed. “It will be done.” Within moments, the warriors hurried away, preparing for what everyone feared was coming. ⸻ Hailey stood near one of the stone windows, watching the moonlight spill across the forest. Everything had changed in a single night. Yesterday she believed she was simply the girl who had awakened late. Today she had learned she was the heir to an ancient bloodline. A target. Someone wanted by a king she had never met. “You’re thinking too much.” She turned to find Kael standing behind her. “Can you blame me?” “No.” He walked beside her. “When your parents placed you in my arms…” Hailey looked at him. “…they made me swear an oath.” “What oath?” Kael’s voice became quiet. “To protect you until the day you discovered who you truly were.” Hailey searched his face. “So you’ve known me since I was a baby?” He nodded. “I watched you take your first steps.” A small smile crossed Hailey’s face despite everything. “You taught me how to ride.” “I did.” “You were always watching over me.” “I promised your parents I would.” Hailey lowered her eyes. “I was angry with you.” “I know.” “I thought you were hiding the truth because you didn’t trust me.” Kael sighed. “I was hiding it because I wanted you to have a normal childhood.” She looked back toward the moon. “I don’t think I ever had one.” “No.” He smiled sadly. “But you had something your parents wanted more than anything.” “What?” “Sixteen years of peace.” ⸻ Outside, the pack had gathered in the training grounds. Every warrior stood in perfect formation. The atmosphere was tense. Children had been sent indoors. The elders stood near the front, whispering ancient prayers to the Moon Goddess. Kael climbed onto the stone platform overlooking the crowd. “My pack!” Every voice fell silent. “The Shadow King has discovered that the heir has awakened.” A murmur spread through the warriors. “But hear me well.” His voice rang across the grounds. “We are not surrendering anyone.” The warriors roared in agreement. “This pack has stood together through famine, through war, and through loss.” He drew his sword and raised it high. “And we will stand together again.” The cheers echoed across the valley. Hailey felt tears sting her eyes. She had always believed she was different. An outsider. Yet every wolf standing there was willing to fight for her. Luna smiled. “You see?” Hailey nodded. “I’m not alone.” “Never.” ⸻ As the gathering ended, an elderly woman approached Hailey. Her silver hair flowed beneath a dark cloak. Around her neck hung a necklace shaped like a crescent moon. She smiled kindly. “I’ve been waiting many years to meet you.” Hailey frowned. “Who are you?” “My name is Elder Miriam.” She gently touched the glowing mark on Hailey’s wrist. “The mark has accepted you.” “What does that mean?” “It means your true training must begin.” “Training?” “You’ve awakened your wolf.” She nodded. “But awakening is only the first step.” “What comes next?” The elder smiled. “You must learn to master the gifts hidden within your bloodline.” Hailey’s curiosity grew. “What gifts?” Before Elder Miriam could answer, Hailey suddenly felt a sharp pain in her head. She gasped. The world around her blurred. “Hailey!” Luna cried. A vision flashed before her eyes. A magnificent silver palace stood beneath a glowing full moon. Warriors fought desperately against wolves cloaked in black. Fire consumed the kingdom. A woman wearing a silver crown held a tiny baby in her arms. “Protect her,” the woman pleaded through tears. “She is our last hope.” Then another figure appeared. A man with crimson eyes and a black crown. He drew his sword. The vision shattered. Hailey collapsed into Kael’s arms. She struggled to breathe. “What… was that?” Kael looked deeply shaken. “What did you see?” Hailey slowly looked up. “I saw a kingdom burning.” The colour drained from Kael’s face. “And… a woman.” His voice was barely above a whisper. “My mother.” The elder closed her eyes solemnly. “The memories have begun.” Hailey’s wolf stirred inside her. “This is only the beginning,” Lyra whispered. Far beyond the borders of Moon Shadow Pack, inside a fortress carved into black mountains, a man sat upon a throne of dark stone. A hooded messenger knelt before him. “My King…” The ruler opened his crimson eyes. “The girl?” The messenger bowed his head. “She remembers.” A slow, dangerous smile spread across the Shadow King’s face. “Excellent.” He rose from his throne and gripped the hilt of his sword. “Prepare my army.” He looked toward the moon shining through the fortress window. “The time has come to bring the last heir back to where she belongs.” End of Chapter 16
