I returned home, the pack of cigarettes I'd gone out for forgotten, my mind a storm of dread and defiance. I knew what awaited me – Ragen, my father, a man whose very presence was a storm of aggression and violence. "You little s**t, Link! Getting into yet another fight with Shade, f*****g seriously? Are you trying to get us f*****g killed?" His voice boomed, each word a slap to the face. His posture was threatening, a predator ready to strike as he circled me. We were Alphas, born leaders, but here we were, nothing more than refugees, living on borrowed land and borrowed time. Clive, the Alpha of these lands, had given us sanctuary. My fight with Shade, the heir to this territory, was a dangerous misstep in our precarious existence. "It wasn't f*****g planned," I spat back, my anger rising to meet his. Ragen's laugh was cruel, devoid of any warmth. "Planned or not, you're a walking goddamn disaster, Link! Do you have any idea what's at stake?" He stepped closer with his fists clenched, his body language screaming impending violence. His sudden movement was a trigger, my body tensing, ready for the inevitable clash. But I stood my ground. "We're supposed to be Alphas, not cowards, hiding and bowing our heads." His hand shot out and seized the front of my shirt. In one fluid, aggressive motion, he yanked me forward. My body jerked like a puppet on a string. His face, twisted with rage, was inches from mine. "You think this is about pride? You think this is a f*****g game?" His words were spat out, each syllable dripping with venom. Before I could react, he hurled me with terrifying force. My back slammed against the wall, the impact reverberating through my bones. I gasped for breath, disoriented by his sudden burst of violence. His strength was overwhelming, a brutal reminder of the raw, unchecked power he wielded. "This is about survival, you i***t!" he roared, his eyes blazing with a ferocity that could scorch the earth. The air around us seemed to crackle with his fury, the atmosphere thick with the threat of further violence. I struggled to regain my composure, pain radiating from my back where I'd hit the wall. His outburst was a clear message. A savage declaration that survival wasn't granted. It was seized with both hands, often at the expense of others. His words echoed in my head, a cruel reminder of the law of our existence. Survival of the fittest, survival at any cost. And in his eyes, I saw that cost laid bare: compassion, humanity, decency - all sacrificed on the altar of survival. That night, as I lay in my bed, my body aching from the confrontation, my mind was haunted by Teagan. Her scent and the softness of her touch were all so alien and enticing. I'd never been drawn to a human before, never felt this pull. It was dangerous, forbidden, but I couldn't shake her from my thoughts. Restless and driven by a need I couldn't explain, I slipped into the night. The cool air caressed my skin, the last touch of humanity before I surrendered to my wolf form. My body contorted, bones and muscles twisting, reshaping into the powerful form of a dark black wolf. My senses heightened, the forest alive with sounds and smells, my heart racing with the freedom of the run. Hidden in the shadows, I watched intensely as Teagan stepped out of the gas station alone. Her deliberate and cautious actions painted a picture of unwavering determination. She wasn't just a bystander in this strange and dangerous world; she was becoming a part of it. Teagan jumped inside Shade's insanely tall lifted truck with ease despite her height. She slipped into the driver's seat, her movements initially tentative but quickly turning assertive as she started the engine. The truck roared to life, its deep rumble breaking the silence of the night. She carefully maneuvered the truck, backing it away from its spot and aligning it correctly in a new one. After parking the truck, Teagan hurried back into the gas station, reappearing moments later with Shade in tow. He leaned heavily on her, each of his steps unsteady and laborious. The way she supported him, her small frame compared to his larger, battered one, was a poignant display of her strength and compassion. And what a mess he was. Shade was in an undeniably precarious state. Our exchange had been intense, but whatever had transpired afterward had left him in a far worse condition. A mix of emotions churned within me – a strange cocktail of triumph and unease. Triumph because dominance in our world was a measure of strength, but unease because Shade's weakened state hinted at unknown dangers that had befallen him. Watching them from my concealed position, a surge of panic washed over me. Shade, the heir to a brutal Alpha, likely the person who put him in that state, was now entwined with Teagan, a human whose life had been far removed from our savage realities. The situation was fraught with danger – Despite his strength and lineage, Shade was vulnerable, and Teagan, an innocent in our ruthless world, had unwittingly become a central figure in this unfolding drama. My instincts as a wolf, raw and unfiltered, screamed within me. Teagan had unknowingly stepped into our realm, a world where raw power and ruthless rules reigned supreme. And now, she was irrevocably linked to Shade. My father's words echoed in my mind, his violent outburst a reminder of the life we lived. If he ever discovered Teagan and realized she was within his reach, he wouldn't hesitate. He'd see her as nothing more than a prize, a human plaything to satisfy his twisted desires. As dawn approached, I knew this wasn't just a fleeting interest. I had to protect her, keep her safe from the dark, violent world I came from. She was innocent, unmarked by the brutality that defined our lives, and damn it, she was going to stay that way.
