Chapter 1

1001 Words
Emery's POV “Why would you do that?” he asked, kicking vigorously as I lay on my back sobbing. Even in my own pack, I couldn’t speak up for any reason. Despite everything that I had gone through, they didn’t hesitate to punish me at the slightest bit or even throw me into a dungeon for a while. What have I done now? I had only spoken back to my supervisor, complaining that the workload was too much. They punished me by beating me for speaking up, telling me I wasn’t worth anything because I was of the lowest rank in my pack. The abuse was overwhelming, and I couldn’t wait for my mate. I yearned for the day when I would have a reason to leave this pack for good. I wished I could escape from all this abuse and live my life happily somewhere better. Those hopes would soon become reality as the mating ceremony approached, and I eagerly anticipated discovering what fate had in store for me. I couldn’t wait to meet my mate! I knew at this very moment, all the palace girls would be discussing this, excited and happy with giggly tones about their mates. I genuinely hoped that mine would work out. I didn’t mind whoever he was, as long as he could take me out of this dungeon, I would accept him as my mate! I snapped back to reality, realizing I was still being kicked. It hurt so much, and I let out a groan. The guard stepped back away from me. I looked at my knees and saw they were bleeding seriously. “What would I do? The ceremony is just a few days away; how would I go with my bleeding knees?” I immediately thought about everything. I shouldn’t have spoken back to the Alpha. After all, it wasn’t just me he was referring to; he was talking to all the palace maidens. Why is it always me stuck in these situations? I mean, seriously, why did I feel the need to open my mouth in the first place? The other maidens had all kept quiet and watched me dragged out to be beaten for talking back to the Alpha. I was even lucky, as it could have been worse. If I had been imprisoned, I risked missing the mating ceremony altogether. That would have been disastrous. It would mean staying here until another moon revolution, which could be up to a year. And I didn’t want that to happen. I had to leave, and I had to leave now. I didn’t trust myself to abide by all these rules I considered ridiculous in this palace without speaking up. If I remained here, I would be beaten again, I was sure. Maybe even thrown in the dungeon this time around. I didn’t want that to happen. I was fed up and needed a place where I could speak freely without fear of hurt or pain. Oh moon goddess! Please help me. I’m tired of living a life that isn’t mine. The rule of Alpha Sebastian was just so tiring! ALPHA SEBASTIAN: I was addressing the maidens when one of them had the audacity to interrupt me, expressing dissatisfaction with the instructions I was giving them. I turned to look, and it was that same girl that the gods have forsaken! “Take her out and teach her a lesson!” I growled in anger. It is unheard of that a young maiden questions my authority in the palace. It wasn’t possible! They took her out, and I’m sure they’re going to teach her a serious lesson, as she must be very stupid to think that she can stand up to the alpha of her pack without facing the consequences. I talked to the other maidens about the upcoming mating ceremony and emphasized how they must behave to ensure that their mate accepts them. This is because anyone rejected by their mate will have to wait for a long time before another mating ceremony is conducted. After that, I dismissed them, and then I went back to what I was doing. I had a meeting with the pack elders to attend to. I hated any meetings with the elders because their level of entitlement was always very high. Normally, they were entitled to say whatever they wanted reasonably too because they were like the second-hand decision-makers of the pack, but one out of two times, they took their entitlement overboard, and it infuriated me to the point of bringing my wolf form out. In the past, something set me off, and I came close to taking out one of the elders, leaving him seriously hurt, and he's still not fully recovered. After that incident, they became more cautious, but every now and then, a couple of them slipped and tried to provoke me into causing harm. So it was kind of our duty to put them in place and all. I prepared for the meeting in my room while having a discussion with my personal assistant Derek. Derek was the only one who could understand me to a certain extent, and that made most of our conversations about things that he could cover up for me in the palace. Because the mating ceremony was upcoming, this palace was bustling with excitement. There were also a lot of things to be done, and I kept on assigning roles to different people, and it was their direct responsibility to ensure that everything about this day went perfectly without a hitch or accident. I went about making sure everything was in place for the occasion. At this moment, I was very irritable because I knew a lot of Alphas would be coming, and it was compulsory that everything went smoothly. It was our pack's turn to host it; I must make sure there is no lack in food and in drink. Everything must be perfect, perfectly perfect if there was such a thing.
