I embraced him back, it was as if my heart recognized him before my mind could catch up. I felt tears streaming down my cheeks.
'The hell! Why am I even crying!'
"Ate, kuya" I was brought back to reality when that kid spoke.
I immediately pulled away from the embrace and retreated to distance myself from him.
'What the hell am I doing?'
Hugging a stranger is completely insane. I wiped away my tears, took a step backward, turned my back to him, and then walked away. But before I could get far, he grabbed my hand and turned me to face him.
It felt like electricity was coursing through my body because of what he did.
I looked into his golden brown eyes, trying to remember how I knew this man who seemed to know me so well. My memories were still a jumbled mess, but there was a warmth and familiarity in his gaze that made me feel safe.
"Reign, where are you going?" He asked with his deep voice, and he seemed puzzled. I took my hand away from his grip.
"Sorry, I don't know who you are" I said, and finally left their spot. Just in time, Ian came out of the store and approached me with a smile, carrying his purchases.
"I thought you were in the bookstore?" He asked.
"I wanna go home" I ignored his question. He looked at where I left the guy earlier then looked back at me.
He probably noticed that I was no longer in the mood, so he agreed and didn't ask any more questions.
IT WAS ALREADY getting dark when we arrived home. I went straight into my room and laid down on my bed. I took the pillow beside me, looked up at the ceiling, and started thinking about what happened today.
"Who are they?" I asked the air as if it could give me an answer.
I suddenly remembered what happened earlier at the mall.
("Reign" he mumbled, then stood up and couldn't believe what he was seeing.)
("Reign, I can't believe it's really you" he said, his voice trembling with emotion.)
("I thought I'd lost you forever" he said, unbelieving, then smiled broadly and hugged me tightly.)
(I didn't realize that I was hugging him back, then suddenly a word came out from my mouth...)
("Love")
("Reign, where are you going?" He asked with his deep voice, and he seemed puzzled. I took my hand away from his grip.)
("Sorry, I don't know who you are" I said, and finally left their spot.)
I hugged my pillow tightly. If it were a person, it might have suffocated because of how tightly I was hugging it.
My thoughts were interrupted when someone knocked on the door. Before I could answer, the door opened, so I turned to it and saw Ian standing there.
I turned my gaze again up to the ceiling and waited for him to talk, but a few seconds had passed, and he still wasn't speaking. He's like that when he's worried about me. I turned back to him then said,
"I'm okay" so he wouldn't worry anymore.
He approached me and sat on the bed, but I remained lying down.
"Reign, you know you can tell me anything" I looked at him, and he was looking back at me worriedly. I sighed then sat on the bed.
"Ian, didn't the doctor say that there's a small chance for me to remember anything?" I started.
"Yeah. Why, do you remember something in your past?" He asked as if he was surprised, I can't explain his reaction.
"Yes...
maybe..." I answered, unsurely.
"Huh? I don't get it," He said, confused.
I explained everything that happened from Cassa Mercedes to the mall.
His eyes widened as if he couldn't believe what he heard, then he suddenly hit me on the shoulder.
'Damn this gay! That hurt!'
I glared at what he did, then he just made a peace sign. The heck.
"So the guy earlier is someone from your past?" He asked.
"I don't know. He just looks familiar to me" I said.
"Didn't you ask him?"
"I told you, I left immediately" I answered. I was also confused.
The room filled with silence for a moment.
"So, what's your plan now?" He asked, breaking the silence.
"I don't know. I don't even know where to start" I stated.
"Why don't you start at Cassa Mercedes?" Ian has a point. If I want to regain my memory, I need to start at Cassa Mercedes.
"Yeah, you're right" I agreed with him.
"But don't rush things, Reign" He said seriously, making it sound like a warning. I looked at him, puzzled.
"It's for your own good," he added.
"Because you might get hurt. You're so clumsy after all" He suddenly laughed while saying this.
I don't know, but it feels like there's another meaning to what he said.
I just glared at him. Sometimes I really can't understand what's going on in Ian's head.
"You know Ian, you're actually reliable, but you're just being silly sometimes" I teased him. He frowned, making me laugh even more.
"You're so mean," he said and bowed his head. He's probably sulking.
"Reign" He called me with his serious voice. He lifted his head and looked straight at me. I became nervous at his gaze.
"Wh-what?" I began to stutter as I asked him.
'What did I do wrong? Is it because I teased him?'
'Damn! He's always doing that to me.'
"That guy from the mall" he said, then he gripped my shoulder and looked at me intently. I became even more nervous because of what he did.
"What about him?" I asked. Damn, I'm really nervous.
"If he's not your boyfriend or something in the past..." He left me hanging. Heck! My hands are sweating.
"Can I have him instead?" he said, grinning.
'What the--'
He let go of my shoulder, clasped his hands together, and pretended to be excited.
"He's so handsome. I thought my underwear was going to fall off earlier"
I got annoyed because of his act. The hell! I could hardly breathe from nervousness. So, I hit him on the head out of irritation.
"Ouch! That hurt!" He complained. Damn him. I stood up and walk towards the door of my room.
"Where are you going?" He asked.
"I'm not going anywhere. You! Get out of my room, you jerk!" I said angrily to him and dragged him out of the room.
"Hey, wait a minute. You haven't answered my question--" He couldn't finish his sentence because I closed the door.
"Reign, just answer my question" he knocked on the door.
"Leave me alone, you jerk!" I yelled at him. I didn't hear anything else from him, so I went back to bed. Damn him.
I was really nervous about his act earlier.
'But wait, is it possible that--'
'No! no! no!'
I shook my head because of my thoughts.
'The heck am I thinking!'
I looked at the ceiling and thought about the first step to remember, not realizing that I had fallen asleep.
"MOM, what are you cooking?"
"Pork caldereta"
"Can I taste it? It smells delicious"
"Sure, baby," the mother took some of her cooking with a spoon, blew on it, and let her child taste it.
"How is it?" The mother asked.
"Mom, it's delicious," the child happily replied.
The child left her mother's side to get a plate. She returned to her mother's whereabouts and handed her the plate.
"Mom, I want to eat," the girl said, then looked at her mother with pleading eyes.
The mother laughed at her child's actions and took the plate to put rice and the dish she cooked on it.
I was inside a large kitchen, not far from where they were, and I didn't know how I got here. I just watched them as they happily talked.
'Is it just me, or do the mother and the girl really look like me?'
I walked towards them but eventually stopped when I heard a buzz coming from nowhere. I searched for it but--
I soon determined that the annoying buzz was coming from the black alarm clock that lay next to me on the nightstand.
I sat up from lying down and turned off the alarm clock. I closed my eyes as I sat still, trying to remember my dream but failed to do it.
I pinched my nose bridge out of curiosity. I stood up and ignored what I dreamt about.
'It's probably nothing'
I took the towel and went to the bathroom to do my morning rituals. After that, I changed into our work uniform, got ready, and left the room.
I immediately saw Ian in the living room watching an action movie. I approached him to say goodbye.
"I'm leaving" I said. He looked in my direction.
"Aren't you going to have breakfast first?" He asked.
"No, I'll be late"
"Okay. Take care" I just nodded at what he said.
I was about to leave when I heard a gunshot. I turned my gaze to the television and saw a man pointing his gun at a woman on the ground.
The guy shot the woman, and her blood spilled on his face. I was stunned by what I saw, and I could feel my body shaking.
"Oh, I thought you were going to be late?"
I couldn't answer him because my vision suddenly went dark, but before I lost consciousness, I heard Ian's scream.
"f**k! Reign!"
