CHAPTER THREE
I lowered my head immediately and focused on my food, hoping not to attract any attention to myself.
“That's Ethan Carter.”Leah suddenly whispered beside me.
“He's the captain of the soccer team and also the richest guy in school.”
“His father is the most……..” just when she was about to complete her statement, the screams coming from the crowd intensified.
I dropped my plate of food and turned towards the direction of the noise to see what had happened.
A slim tall girl with her uniform skirt high to the point I could see her inner thigh walked over to Ethan and kissed him in public.
Shocked at how daring she was, I turned to Leah for explanation again.
“That's Natalie Brookes. Ethan's… girlfriend.”
Leah whispered into my ear.
“Nobody knows for sure if they're actually dating, but Natalie always boasts about it and Ethan never complains about it, so we just assumed that they were…. You know, together.”
Natalie kept rubbing and touching Ethan every single time she talked, but Ethan didn't seem to reciprocate it and neither did he refuse it.
Well that was their business anyway, I wasn't interested in their affairs. I turned and faced my food to continue eating.
“Anyways Sophia, just a quick reminder to stay away from Natalie. She doesn't like it when other girls come close to Ethan.” Leah said.
I looked at her for a few seconds before replying to her.
“Well, I myself don't intend on being cozy with any of them too. I just want to study peacefully and graduate.” I told her.
We finished our meal and Leah offered to take me to my assigned class. I brought out the schedule the principal had given me and handed it over to her.
After scanning through the paper she immediately looked at me in shock.
“Sophia,!! she called.
“Yes Leah.” I replied.
“Oh my God! you're in the same class with Ethan and his friends. What are the chances?”
“Well…is that a problem?” I asked, looking surprised. “I mean, I don't have a problem with them, and I don't intend to either, so I think I'm safe.” I collected the schedule from her and put it into my bag.
“Well, just a quick reminder to watch out for Natalie like I said.” Leah cautioned me again.
As we got to my class, I thanked Leah and promised to make it up to her for her help before she waved me goodbye.
As I got into the classroom, everyone's attention turned towards me.
“Good morning sir, I am Sophia Reynolds, the new student.” I introduced myself to the teacher.
“Welcome to my class, Miss Reynolds. I am Mr Richard, your homeroom teacher. You have a lot to catch up on, I hope you're up for it.”
“Yes Mr Richard, I am.” I smiled as I replied to him politely.
“Ok, so you'll take your seat over there.” He said as he pointed to an empty seat behind the class. I looked to the side and saw him there, staring at me as though I had offended him.
“Ethan, move your things away from the other seat and have Sophia settle in quietly.” The teacher demanded.
“Oh…so that was the reason he looked at me that way like I had invaded his safe space.” I thought to myself.
I walked over to my seat beside Ethan's and quietly settled down, breathing a sigh of relief.
The rest of the class went on quietly and peacefully. Most of the things being taught were already things I had practiced on my own at home.
Just like that, the bell rang and class came to an end. I went to Mr Richard's office to ask him for some guidance regarding my schedule and classes I had missed.
He handed me the handouts I had missed and said I could always find him if I needed any help. I thanked him and walked out of his office.
Suddenly, I remembered that mom had told me to pick Addy up from school.
“Oh my!!!”
“I'm already one hour late.” I didn't know I had spent so much time in Mr Richards office.
I ran immediately to catch up with the bus and luckily it hadn't left yet.
Addy was already looking so frustrated when I met him.
“Sophia, you came late.” Addy complained with his mouth pouting.
“I'm so sorry Addy, I got caught up with class, forgive me okay.”
“Humph,” he replied to me still pouting.
I went closer to him and tickled him hard knowing that was one way to make him laugh.
We both laughed and headed back home.
After dinner that night we all sat in the living room to watch Addy's favourite cartoon.
“How was school today?” Mom asked as she turned towards me her gaze now focused on me.
“It went well mom. My classmates were nice and…I made a new friend.”
“Oh really, what's her name?” Mom asked, surprised
“Her name is Leah, She helped show me around the school.”I replied, still looking at the television.
“Oh wow, She has a nice name, but remember Soph, know the kind of friends you'll make while in school. And like I'll always say avoid bad company.” I chorused after her which made us both laugh.
“You could invite her over sometime for dinner.”
Mom requested.
“Sure mom, I'll do so.”
Addy had already slept off so I carried him gently back to his room ensuring he didn't wake up.
I looked at him and gently patted his hair. Just then I felt tears dripping down my face. It was impossible to forget what had happened the other day, even though Addy always smiled, I could see the fear he hid behind it. He was still frightened from the events of the other day.
I kissed him on his forehead and wiped the tears from my face. Laying down on my bed I looked at the ceiling and suddenly, thoughts of
Ethan flashed my mind.
“Wait, why was I thinking about him,”I thought to myself
I immediately covered my head with my teddy bear and started moving frantically on the bed in order to think of other things, gradually I became drowsy and before I knew it I had dozed off.
