Shadows Unveiled Gavin’s POV Ryder gripped his rifle more firmly and fixed his gaze on the entryway. In a firm, determined voice, he said, "We have to stop her." Damon nodded resolutely, his mouth firm. Whispering, "On my count," he said. Three times two times one. Armed to the teeth, we burst through the threshold. Surprise on their faces, Mara and her troop turned around. With a contemptuous narrowing of her eyes, Mara said, "Well, well." "Observe who chose to come to the party." Stepping forward, Damon spoke in a low, deadly voice. He snarled, "It's over, Mara," his gaze fixed on hers. It's over. My spine tingled as Mara laughed, a harsh, icy sound. Her voice tinged with resentment, "Oh, I'm just getting started," she said. "You believe you can halt me? All you are, is a gang of traitors." Ryder gripped his gun tighter, rage flaring in his eyes. His voice thick with rage, "You killed innocent people," he spit. You devastated lives. Smirk playing on her lips, Mara shrugged. "They were weak," she said contemptuously. "In the big picture, collateral damage." Grateful, Damon raised a hand, his gaze never leaving Mara's. His voice piercing the tension, he said, "Enough." "Show us where Mara is." Mara grinned wider, a lunatic sparkle in her eyes. Low and sarcastic, she said, "You'll never find her." She vanished into the shadows. Distress flickered in Damon's eyes as he glanced at me. He said in a chilly, definitive tone, "We'll see about that." Weapons swinging, we rushed forward before Mara could respond. Every step of the violent and ferocious battle was a haze. We kept our place, our resolve strengthened by the frantic intensity of Mara's pack's battle. "Retrench!" Mara yelled, her voice carrying above the mayhem. "We can get back together!" But it was too late now. Ryder and Damon battled side by side, their moves matched with lethal accuracy. Claws and weapons gleaming in the low light, Gavin and I repelled Mara's pack. "Watch out!" Ryder yelled amid the mayhem, his voice clear. I whirled around in time to avoid a hard swipe. I yanked and my claws made contact. No time to rejoice as Mara's lieutenant fell. Mara had to be stopped. "Give up," Mara. Pinning her to the ground, Damon yelled. Hatred flaring in her eyes, Mara scowled. "You believe you can halt me? You all are idiots. We stood amid the remains of Mara's refuge, the air heavy with the smell of blood and conflict. Long shadows were created on the walls by the flickering low lights overhead. Mara was lying on the ground, her pack members either quieted her down or ran into the night. With a tight, urgent voice, Ryder added, "We need to find Mara's boss." "Before they strike once more. Nodding, Damon looked about the room for any clues. "You claimed Mara's boss was manipulating things, Gavin. Who might it be, any idea?" Clearly frustrated, Gavin shook his head. I only know a handful of their senior lieutenants, he said. "But Mara never revealed her directives openly. She never brought up the boss's name." I balled my hands, the weight of our goal bearing down on me. I resolutely stated, "We have to find them." "Prior to their injuring anybody else." Damon's grizzled jaw clenched. "Agreed," was his quiet reply. "But we must have a strategy. Mara's hideaway won't be secure for very long." Stepping forward, Ryder fixed his gaze on Damon's. His voice firm, "We can use Mara's network," he said. Ask any of her lieutenants if they know anything. Frowning, Gavin's eyes flickered with doubt. His voice low, "They won't talk willingly," he warned. "They support Mara's supervisor with loyalty. They won't readily turn against them." Damon's face became inscrutable and his eyes hardened. His voice icy, he said, "Then we'll make them talk." Ryder and I looked at one other, worry written on our features. Though the fight with Mara had worn us out, we could not afford to relax. Not when Mara's employer was still very much alive. I said, "We need to move," in a very anxious voice. "Before it gets too late. Nodding, Damon's eyes flickered with resolve. His voice firm, "Gavin, stay here and keep watch," he said. Lila, with Ryder, please. After Mara's lieutenants we are." As we emerged from Mara's lair and back into the night's shadows, Ryder and I slipped into step behind Damon. Silent and still under the moonlight lay the town of Silverwood in front of us. But there was peril waiting to strike at every turn. We hurried along the empty streets, ears and eyes listening for any indications of trouble. Every second felt like it lasted forever, the strain was tangible. At last, we arrived at the town limits, where it was said that Mara's devoted lieutenants were holed up. With a gesture, Damon told us to stop. Lowly, he murmured, "This is it." Lt. Mara is inside. With a nod, Ryder gripped his weapon more firmly. Resolved, he said, "Let's do this." Drawn weapons in hand, we burst through the door together. The lieutenants of Mara whirled about, surprise on their features. This? A sneering one of them narrowed his suspicious eyes. An appearance by traitors? Daring and low in voice, Damon moved forward. He snarled, "We need to talk," his gaze fixed on theirs. About Mara's supervisor. The lieutenants looked at one other, doubts glimmering in their gazes. "We don't know anything," a defiantly said one of them. "Mara kept everything close to her." Furious, Ryder moved forward, his eyes blazing. Angry, he spat, "You expect us to believe that?" You were her men on the right. All she did, you knew." Fear mixed with resolve, the lieutenants glanced at one other. Despite the tremble in their palms, one of them said, "We won't talk," their voice steady. You'll have to murder us first, I said. Damon's face became inscrutable as his jaw tightened. His voice icy, he said, "So be it." It was turmoil in the room before anyone could respond. Every one of us was battling with a fierce ferocity, blades clashing and claws swiping. The lieutenants battled valiantly, their allegiance to Mara's superiors clear in every blow. "Watch out!" Across the mayhem, I yelled. I whirled around in time to avoid a hard swipe. I yanked and my claws made contact. Not that there was time to rejoice when one of the lieutenants fell. Mara's supervisor needed to be stopped. " Give up!" Pinning one of the lieutenants to the ground, Damon yelled. The lieutenants scoffed, hate flaring in their eyes. Think you can stop us, do you? Everyone of you is a moron." The other lieutenants suddenly threw us off and charged forward. Recalling Mara's brutality strengthened our determination as we avoided. We retaliated franticly, each punch landing with lethal accuracy. "That ends now!" Ryder yelled amid the mayhem, his voice clear. But the lieutenants continued, their resolve unflinching. Battle sounds filled the room as blades clashed and claws slashed. Each second of the intense struggle was a whirl of violence and rage. Suddeny, a voice said, "Stop!" through the mayhem. Turning to face the person standing at the doorway, we froze. With icy, resentful eyes, Mara's supervisor loomed before us. Mara's supervisor snarled, "So, you found me," their voice condescending and low. "You won't, however, stop me. Right now, not. Damon looked at me, resolve in his eyes. He said in a chilly, definitive tone, "We'll see about that." Weapons swung, we rushed forward before Mara's employer could respond. Every step of the violent and ferocious battle was a haze. We stayed put, our resolve strengthened by the frantic intensity with which Mara's employer battled. "Retreat!" Boss of Mara yelled, their voice resonating over the confusion. "We can assemble again!" But it was too late now. Fighting side by side, Damon and Ryder's motions were deadly accurate. Claws and weapons flashing in the low light, Gavin and I held off Mara's boss. "Watch out!" Cut through the mayhem came Damon's voice. I whirled about, just missing a hard hit. I yanked, my claws making contact. When Mara's supervisor stammered back, Damon had the chance he needed. Damon struck hard enough to knock Mara's employer down. Then Damon said, "It's over," in a chilly, final tone. You believe it to be that simple? Blood sawping from their mouths, Mara's boss scowled. "You don't realise how much more is going on here. We are only getting started."
