Evelyn's POV
The hospital smelled like disinfectant and fear. I walked through the automatic doors with Benjamin beside me, my hands shaking even though I tried to keep them still.
"You do not have to do this," Benjamin said quietly. "No one would blame you if you turned around right now."
"I would blame myself."
The elevator ride to the maternity ward felt endless. I watched the numbers climb, just like I did at the Riverside Hotel yesterday. Was that really only yesterday? It felt like a lifetime ago.
Floor 1. Floor 2. Floor 3.
"What room?" Benjamin asked.
I checked my phone. Vincent had texted me the information. "Room 304."
Floor 4. The doors opened.
A nurse at the station looked up. "Can I help you?"
"We are here to see Tonia Williams," I said.
The nurse checked her computer. "Are you family?"
"No. But she asked for me."
The nurse looked confused but pointed down the hall. "Room 304. But she is in active labor, so you might not be able to stay long."
We walked down the hallway. I could hear other women in other rooms, some crying, some laughing. New life coming into the world while my old life fell apart.
Benjamin stopped outside Room 304. "Do you want me to come in with you?"
"Please."
He pushed open the door.
Tonia lay in the hospital bed, her face pale and sweaty, her hair sticking to her forehead. She looked young, scared and alone.
When she saw me, her eyes filled with tears. "You came."
"I came."
"I thought... after everything... you would not."
I walked closer to the bed. Benjamin stayed near the door, giving us space but ready to step in if needed.
"Where is Richard?" Tonia asked, her voice breaking.
"In jail. They are not going to let him out."
She closed her eyes, fresh tears sliding down her cheeks. "I know. The police came to my apartment this morning. They asked me questions about the money, about the company, about everything."
"What did you tell them?"
"The truth. That Richard showed me how to access some files, but I did not know he was stealing. I thought it was just business."
She looked at me, her eyes pleading. "You have to believe me, Evelyn. I did not know."
I wanted to hate her. I wanted to scream at her, to tell her she destroyed my marriage, my life, everything I believed in.
But looking at her now, scared and pregnant and alone, I could not find the anger I expected.
"Did you love him?" I asked.
Tonia was quiet for a long moment. Then she said, "I thought I did. But now I think I just loved the idea of him. The successful man, the money, the future he promised me."
"He promised me a future too."
"I know." She grabbed my hand suddenly, squeezing tight. "I am so sorry, Evelyn. For everything. For the affair, for Samuel, for believing Richard when he said you did not love him anymore, that your marriage was ending anyway."
Another contraction hit her and she cried out, gripping my hand harder.
A nurse rushed in. "Okay, Tonia, it is time. We need to get you to deliver."
"Wait," Tonia said, still holding my hand. "Please do not leave. I know I have no right to ask, but I do not want to do this alone."
I looked back at Benjamin. He nodded, telling me without words that whatever I decided, he would support it.
"I will stay," I said.
The next two hours were the longest of my life. I stood beside Tonia while she brought Richard's daughter into the world, holding her hand, telling her to breathe, watching a miracle happen despite all the pain surrounding it.
When the baby finally came, crying loud and healthy, the doctor placed her on Tonia's chest.
"It is a girl," the doctor said.
Tonia sobbed, holding her daughter close. "Rachel. Her name is Rachel."
I stepped back, giving them space, and found Benjamin waiting in the hallway.
"How are you?" he asked.
"I do not know. I just watched my husband's mistress give birth to his second child. How am I supposed to be?"
"However you need to be."
I leaned against the wall, suddenly exhausted. "She named her Rachel."
"That is a beautiful name."
"Richard wanted to name our daughter Rachel. If we ever had one." The words came out bitter. "I guess he got his wish. Just not with me."
Benjamin moved closer, his hand finding mine. "Evelyn..."
"I am okay. Really. Or I will be."
A nurse came out of the room. "Ms. Williams is asking for you again."
I went back inside. Tonia sat propped up in bed, baby Rachel sleeping in her arms.
"Thank you," Tonia said. "For staying. For being here when Richard could not be."
"You are welcome."
"I need to tell you something. Something important." Tonia looked down at Rachel, her voice soft. "Richard lied to both of us. About everything. But the biggest lie was about the company."
I moved closer. "What do you mean?"
"He told me Vincent was dying. That the doctors gave him six months, maybe a year. He said once Vincent died, you would inherit everything and he could convince you to sell the company. That was the plan all along."
My blood went cold. "My father is not dying."
"I know that now. But Richard made me believe it. He showed me fake medical reports, made up stories about hospital visits. He said he was only staying with you to make Vincent's last days peaceful."
Benjamin appeared in the doorway, his face hard. "Did you just say Richard showed you fake medical reports?"
Tonia nodded. "He had a whole folder on his computer. Documents that looked real, with Vincent's name on them, talking about heart disease and how bad it was getting."
"That is evidence of fraud," Benjamin said. "If Richard created fake medical documents, that is another crime."
I could not speak. Could not breathe. Richard had not just stolen money. He had faked my father's death to manipulate his mistress.
"There is more," Tonia continued. "Richard has other accounts. Offshore, in the Cayman Islands. He moved money there, lots of money, more than what the police found."
"How much more?" Benjamin asked.
"I do not know exactly. But he told me once we had enough to live anywhere in the world. To start over, just him, me and the kids."
I found my voice. "You need to tell the police everything you just told us."
"I will. I promise. But first..." Tonia looked down at Rachel again. "Can you do me a favor? A huge favor that I have no right to ask?"
"What?"
"If something happens to me, if I cannot take care of my children, will you make sure they are okay? Not for Richard, not for me, but for Samuel and Rachel. They did not ask for any of this."
My throat tightened. "Nothing is going to happen to you."
"But if it does. Please, Evelyn. You are the only person I trust."
I looked at this tiny baby, innocent and perfect, born into such a mess.
"I promise," I whispered.
Tonia closed her eyes, exhausted. "Thank you."
Benjamin and I left the hospital as the sun started to set. We sat in his car in the parking lot, neither of us moving.
"You were amazing in there," Benjamin said.
"I was just being human."
"No. You were being better than human. You were being kind to someone who hurt you. That takes real strength."
I turned to look at him. "Benjamin, what Tonia said about the offshore accounts. Can the police trace that?"
"They can try. But if Richard hid the money well enough, it might take months or years to find it all."
"And in the meantime, he sits in jail, planning his next move."
Benjamin reached over and took my hand. "He cannot hurt you anymore, Evelyn. I will not let him."
"You cannot promise that."
"Watch me."
My phone buzzed. A text from my father: "Come home, sweetheart. We need to talk. It is about Richard's lawyer. They are planning something."
I showed Benjamin the message, and his jaw tightened.
"We should go," he said, starting the car.
As we drove through the city, I could not stop thinking about baby Rachel. About Samuel. About two innocent children who would grow up with Richard as their father.
And I could not stop wondering what Richard's lawyer was planning that had my father so worried.
