Leilani
“Don’t move,” I warned, forcing myself up. My knees buckled immediately.
“Leilani!” Lyra yelled and ran to me, grabbing me as my body swayed.
“It’s fine,” I snapped, yanking my hand free of her hold.
Another howl rang out and I turned to the door, watching as it exploded inward.
Wood splintered everywhere and wolves of different sizes and colors poured in.
“There she is, kill her!”
My wolf was quick to take over, as though she had been readying herself all these while. My claws jutted out my fingers, and I slashed at the muzzle of the nearest wolf.
“Back off,” I hissed at the others, hoping my first attack would deter them.
It didn’t, and my gaze locked onto the nearest threat.
“Get her!” Someone barked.
I saw a figure loom over me, and then hands clamped against my throat, blocking my airway as claws sank into my flesh.
“Hold her down, don’t let her shift…”
“Shut up!” I snarled, raking my razor edged nail down his abdomen. He howled in pain, releasing his grip on me.
While he was distracted, I drove my claws into his throat in retaliation, spraying blood everywhere.
He dropped but almost instantly, another took his place. There were too many of them, and I was once again pinned down.
“Don’t let her get away!”
“There’s no need to capture her, just rip her apart.” The lead, I assumed, gave an order.
Canines sank into my side, breaking my flesh open and more claws tore at me.
I struggled to get away but then, I saw a wolf approach Lyra. My eyes went wide with alarm.
“Lyra, run!”
He lunged at her and I screamed, “No!”
Pain be damned.
I sank my claw into the eyes of the man above me, piercing through his orb with a sickening squelch sound, then threw him off of me before slashing the other man’s neck.
I staggered forward and sank my claws into his side.
“Get away from her!” I roared.
Lyra's face appeared in my line of sight. “Are you okay?”
“Why are you still here? I f*****g told you to run!” I roared at her.
“I’m not leaving you!” She shot back then gasped, “Watch out!”
She moved before I did, with lightening speed. Her wolf burst forth with a snarl that shook the room. With deadly force, she collided into him.
The next thing I heard was the sound of bones cracking, right before her jaw crunched his throat.
She turned to me and my eyes widened with shock. At that moment, she looked exactly the same as Dad, right before he went berserk.
“Lyra…” I wanted to tell her to stop, before the rage consumed her but something whizzed past me.
She jerked, then froze, looking down.
I looked down too, at the dart protruding from her sides.
I’d seen it once before, with Shawn. He had said it was the new weapon they had procured- Poisoned darts.
All the blood drained from my face.
“Lyra!”
“That one’s down, get the other!”
“No!” I bellowed, scrambling to get to her but something sank into my thigh.
It was a dagger, and the person wielding it, the lead wolf, smiled sinisterly.
That smile was the last expression he gave. I ripped the dagger out, fast, and plunged it into his chest.
The room fell into silence, all of them lay dead.
Without care for my own wounds, I teetered forward to my sister, catching her just as she dropped. Hurriedly, I pulled the dart out with trembling fingers.
“Lyra, no stay with me.”
“It’s poisoned,” she murmured, breathing shallowly.
“I know,” I said, pressing my hands to her side in a panic.. “I’ll fix it…we’ll fix it…”
“There must be something you can do, fix yourself,” I voiced shakily.
She shook her head faintly, “I can’t, it won’t work.”
“It…It only works on others.”
“No!” I blurted, rocking her. “That can’t be, fix it, do something!”
She shook her head, defeated.
For me, time stilled as the painful realization set in. I was still dumbstruck when I felt her hand press weakly against mine.
My attention snapped to her, “What are you doing?”
I felt warmth spread out instantly, and I immediately backed away.
“Stop,” I yanked her hand away but she persisted, “I have to do this…”
“No, you’re hurt.”
“Let me go, Lyra,” I hissed, trying to free my hand.
Surprisingly, I found that I couldn’t. She had a dead-lock on me and despite my protest, she began to transfer energy to me, healing my wounds at a rapid rate.
“Lyra, please, stop.” I resorted to pleading but my damn sister just smiled at me in the exact way she had when I first laid eyes on her.
Finally, her grip on me slackened and she sagged into my arms.
“Lyra!”
“Listen to me…” She whispered, eyes fluttering weakly.
Tears blurred my vision, and I choked out brokenly, “No…”
“Live, you have to live,” she wheezed.
“No,” I shook my head, chest tightening painfully. “Dont speak, I’ll get help, I’ll…”
“It’s too late. Just promise me…”
“I can’t…” A tear ran down my cheek like rain tracing glass.
Lyra smiled again.
“Leilani,” she called breathlessly, “Take my place.”
“Go to Alpha Rurik, he…he’ll help you.” Her voice faded and my grip on her tightened.
“No…” I refused instantly.
I wasn’t going anywhere, not without her.
“You’ll be safe,” she whispered.
“I don’t care!” I shot out, rocking her again. “Just stay with me.”
“I…I’m glad I found you,” she said softly, a look of reluctance emerging in her eyes.
“Lyra, no…no, stay with me.”
I was sobbing now, chest heaving uncontrollably .
Her eyes fluttered, then a faint smile touched her lips, “I love you, sister.”
Her body went rigid after that, and so did mine.
“Lyra?” I blinked, and tears ran down my cheek.
“Lyra?” I tried again, but I got no response.
“No!”
A scream ripped through my throat and I clutched her unmoving body to myself, feeling her warmth ebb away.
************
I buried her before dawn, hands trembling as I covered her with earth.
My tears had fallen ceaselessly, then finally stopped, as though my body had drained itself of everything.
For hours, I sat there, staring at her grave, then a choked cry trembled past my lips, “I’m sorry.”
When morning came, I was still staring at the ground I’d buried her in.
Suddenly, men emerged from the trees, surrounding me.
I didn’t react to their presence. For all I cared, they could have been Shawn’s men, sent to kill me.
I supposed I would have preferred death. I had nothing else to live for after all. Death had taken it all away from me.
“Alpha Rurik, something seems to have happened here. There are many bodies in the house. A voice rang out.
I finally looked up, squinting when the sun hit my face.
Standing before me was a man, tall and imposing with sharp, blue eyes. He was staring at me, gauging me.
I glanced at Lyra’s grave again, then looked up.
He…he was Alpha Rurik?
