Chapter 6: The Shadows of Uncertainty
The hospital's sterile corridors seemed to stretch on forever, the fluorescent lights overhead casting an eerie glow on the faces of the people rushing to and fro. Ryan's footsteps echoed through the hallway as he made his way to the doctor's office, his heart heavy with worry. He pushed open the door, and the doctor looked up from behind his desk, a sympathetic expression on his face.
"Ah, Ryan, I presume?" the doctor said, his voice soft and measured.
Ryan nodded, his eyes locked on the doctor's. "How is he, doc? How's Jin?"
The doctor leaned back in his chair, his eyes clouding over like a stormy sky. "Jin's condition is... complicated, Ryan. He's in a coma, and I'm afraid it's indefinite."
Ryan's face felt like it had been slapped, his eyes widening in shock. "Indefinite? What does that mean?"
The doctor's expression didn't change, but his voice took on a somber tone. "It means we're unsure when he'll wake up, or if he'll wake up at all. His brain is recovering, but it's a slow process. We need to take things one day at a time."
Ryan's world seemed to spin around him, his mind reeling with the implications. He stumbled backward, his hand grasping for the chair behind him. He sank into it, his eyes fixed on the doctor.
"How long?" Ryan asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
The doctor shook his head. "It's hard to say. Days, weeks, months... it's impossible to predict."
Ryan felt like he'd been punched in the gut, his breath knocked out of him. He thought of Sophia, Aisha, and the rest of the Richard's family, and the weight of his responsibility settled in like a crushing burden.
" Doc, you remember how Jin helped your hospital so many times when it almost crumbled financially? “
Ryan asked. He needed to keep Jin's condition a secret no one else would know of because the more people knew, the more likely it was for Helena to hear it, and it would give her an upper hand, some part of him made him believe Helena was behind Jin's accident but he could not let her win.
The doctor nodded, a sign of familiarity to the story
" Yes I remember very well, and I promised I would always do whatever was in my power to protect his interest"
" Well now is the time Doc, to protect Jin. No one can know of his condition, not even his family ".
As he left the hospital, Ryan's mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. He remembered Jin's words, whispered in his ear before he went unconscious: "Ryan, promise me... promise me you'll do whatever it takes to protect our family... Don't let Helena win."
Ryan knew he had to act fast, but he couldn't tell Sophia or Aisha about Jin's condition. Not yet. He needed a plan, and he needed it now.
He pulled out his phone and brought up a photo of Jin, his eyes scanning the image as an idea began to form. He opened Photoshop on his laptop and started editing the photo, changing Jin's face to match a rough sketch of a man he'd seen around town. The man looked like a gangster, with a scar above his left eyebrow, a slight scar, just like Jin's, and a cold, calculating gaze.
Ryan printed out the edited photo and tucked it into his pocket, along with a determination to find the man in the picture. He hailed a taxi and gave the driver an address on the outskirts of town, his eyes scanning the streets as they passed by.
The taxi dropped him off at a rundown bar, the sign above the door creaking in the wind. Ryan pushed open the door, his eyes adjusting to the dim light inside. He approached the bartender, a gruff-looking man with a thick beard.
"I'm looking for someone," Ryan said, showing the bartender the photo.
The bartender's expression didn't change, but his eyes flicked to the photo and back to Ryan's face. "Don't know him."
Ryan wasn't surprised. He asked a few more people, but no one seemed to know the man in the photo. Just as he was about to give up, a scruffy-looking man approached him, his eyes darting around the room.
"You're looking for Jimmy, right?" the man said, his voice low and rough.
Ryan's eyes narrowed. "Yeah, that's him. Do you know where I can find him?"
The man nodded, his eyes gleaming with a hint of curiosity. "Yeah, I know where he is. Follow me."
Ryan followed the man through the winding streets, his heart pounding with anticipation. They stopped in front of a rundown apartment building, the walls covered in graffiti.
"Jimmy's place," the man said, jerking his thumb at the building.
Ryan nodded, his hand reaching for the door handle. As he pushed open the door, a figure emerged from the shadows, his eyes flashing with anger.
"Who the...?" Jimmy's voice trailed off as he took in Ryan's appearance, his eyes narrowing into slits. "You!"
Jimmy's fist flew at Ryan's face, catching him off guard. Ryan stumbled backward, his hands up in defense. Jimmy advanced on him, his eyes blazing with fury.
"You hit me with your car, you son of a...!" Jimmy's voice was cut off as Ryan held up his hands, palms out.
"Wait, Jimmy! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to-"
Jimmy's expression didn't change, but his eyes seemed to flicker with recognition. "What do you want?"
Ryan took a deep breath, his eyes locked on Jimmy's. "I want to make a deal with you, Jimmy. I have a job that requires someone with your... unique skills, looks to be precise ."
Jimmy's gaze lingered on Ryan's face, his expression unreadable. "What kind of job?"
Ryan hesitated, unsure how to phrase it. "I want you to pretend to be a certain person. Someone important. And I need you to do it convincingly."
Jimmy's eyes narrowed, his face set in a skeptical expression. "Pretend to be someone? Who?"
Ryan pulled out a photo of Jin and showed it to Jimmy. "This person. I want you to pretend to be him."
Jimmy's eyes widened slightly as he took in the photo, the man looked like a spitting image of him. His expression changing from skepticism to curiosity. "Why does he look exactly like me? What's in it for me?"
Ryan's eyes locked onto Jimmy's, his voice steady. " I don't know too, but that is why I looked so shocked when I almost hit you the other day.......There's a lot in it for you, Jimmy. Money, power, influence... you name it. But you have to be willing to play the part."
Jimmy's gaze lingered on the photo, his eyes gleaming with interest. "Tell me more, are you doing this against the person's will? ."
Ryan liked how far Jimmy could think
" No, he would want this too, but he is unwell "
"Tell me more about this"
Jimmy demanded
Ryan nodded, a plan beginning to form in his mind. "I'll give you all the details, Jimmy. But first, are you in?"
Jimmy's eyes locked onto Ryan's, his expression cold and calculating. "I'm in. But you better make it worth my while."
As Jimmy nodded, Ryan felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, this crazy plan would work after all.
