Hailey's POV The sound of the impact didn't register as noise at first. It was pressure. A violent compression of air and stone and force that slammed into my body all at once. The world jolted sideways, my vision fracturing into light and shadow and the sharp scream of tearing metal. Then I was on the ground. The breath was knocked clean out of me, my lungs refusing to cooperate as I gasped uselessly against the pavement. Something heavy pinned me down, warm and solid, shielding me as debris rained around us—chips of stone, shattered glass, fragments of a life that had been standing upright seconds earlier.
